So I have been sitting in traffic due to a truck jack knife going on 3 hours logged as on duty made me wonder is this what other drivers log it as or do you log something different to save your 70?

Most drivers that I've talked to log it off duty. Yes, technically you should log it on duty.

All time spent at the controls operating a commercial vehicle must be logged as driving time unless using it for personal use

I guess it depends on how hard a paycheck that is light 3-4 hours production, will hit you later on in the week, and if you don't mind burning a $60 bill

On E logs If I pull my parking brakes I go to on duty not driving. If the delay is extended and I know it will be a while without moving I will go off duty. I don't go off duty unless I could get out of the truck and walk around if I wanted to. Keep in mind I go on the clock at that point so saving the 70 isn't as big a deal for me as a mileage only driver. I get paid regardless of what is logged.

If a company driver, might want to check with your safety department. Most of the time if you are on the freeway stuck because of an accident, you should still be logged as driving.

If you're at the ready, it's "on duty" and you are "at the ready" if you're stuck in traffic, even if traffic is at a standstill for hours. Paper logs can be fudged, of course.

I remember when I had the elogs, there was a function button for that. You'd enter the nearest location and that function. I believe it was on duty, not driving. If you ran out of hours at the end of the day, they would grant you a couple hours, depending how long you sat, so you wouldn't get a violation.
