just remember before powdered donuts and all the b.s. now.... truckers used to ride around with no air ride, no APU, no inverters, no tv, no cooler. just rolling smoking cigs, and drinking coffee.

I still drive without most of that except the air ride and coffee. Thank goodness for air ride, I hate hot coffee in my lap :biggrin_25522:

'Hard to break' longtime habits of old truckers:

    1. Stopping the dock boys from loading those last 6 pallets because you believe that will push you over the 73,280 weight limit.
    2. On your first fuel stop you get nervous because you didn't see any spare inner tubes in your box in case you get a flat.
    3. Making sure you always had a full box of 30 min fusees in case of breakdowns... even if you were hauling flammables.
    4. Your biggest gripe on the road was if you noticed the clamp & nut on your suicide knob was a bit loose.

Please feel free to add to the list. ;)

I remember thinking I was in high cotton when my first boss switched me from a Transtar I with no power steering to a Transtar II with power steering, dang that steering wheel was big, good thing I was skinny then ;) Still had no AC, no air ride, had air wipers.. Those were the days ;)

You forgot the part about having to walk 6-7 miles in the snow just to get to the truck. :biggrin_25519: J/K.....of course.

When I started out for Machinery Hauling in the 80's power steering was a bonus, 1 of the freightliner cab overs had Air Assist steering but was wore out. Every truck he bought got the mufflers replaced with 6" straights, and the fuel got cranked up, Pop as we called him would not let a truck out the gate that didn't roll the coal at some point. Wish now I would have taken more pics, often wonder some of them went, especially the 76 Peterbilt patriot. Only 2 of Pop's trucks had A/C, the newest was a 1983. Most were 70's models and a few were 60's, now you drive down the road you can hardly identify these comfort creatures on the highway.

pretty neat to see the old trucks from the past, I rember when my grate-uncle used to tell story of the good ol days when he drove for yellow freight, he lived up by kc mo and drove for them for years and retired from them in early 1990's. My grandma's brother drove for old diamond also retired from them yrs ago.
