CA and Tire chains

    Ok, I made a dumb rookie idiot mistake and forgot to bring chains with me over Donner.

    For all you west Coast regulars, will TA or Loves let you return them if they are sealed in the bag? Because Flying J says they wont.

    Will they typically bother you about them on a dry roads on a sunny day? If so, how much is the fine and how bad will I be crucified if I get caught?

    I was so excited to not be out east and hit some above freezing weather for a change, that it took passing probably the 2nd huge white sign past Reno before I remembered.

    Yes I am a dumb ##### sometimes, so fire when ready...

    Most places won't let you return chains. The weather looks decent for the coming days so the likelihood of being checked is low. When Caltrans checks trucks coming east if it's snowing I think they'll just turn you around. They usuall check to make sure you have them well before the chain restriction is in place. Usually it's around the Applegate exit.

    Nobody takes them back. All chain sales are final. Unless there is bad weather coming in the area, they don't check unless you're getting a reaming at the weigh station in Truckee.

    My advice Don't get caught without them this time of year. Its at least a $500 fine if your caught without them. Yes I live in Calif and the state will put the chain law in effect on the grapevine and sisokyous. As matter of fact all 11 western states have a chain law of some kind with fines to go along with them.

    Buy I am pretty sure it is just CA, parts of CO, WA, maybe Oregon where you have to carry them no matter what
    , even on dry roads. I know for sure WY, ID, MT, UT you dont need to have them in he vehicle unless the chain laws are active.

    Seems like lately Wyoming has just been saying the hell with it and shutting I 80 down when it gets nasty.

    Technically Oregon doesn't have any specific time to carry, it's an unwritten rule there on when. The rest are usually Oct 31-April 1 with Colorado being the exception, their law states Sep 1 to May 31. I've seen it snow so bad in June on Cabbage they had chain law up (June 16,2008) but that was a freak occurrence.

    I have driven Donner in June with a chain requirement. So what is the thing about Donner scalehouse. I've been in there multiple times and always found them to be professional and businesslike. Back in the 80's I even had a blowby oil can dump on an inspector. All he said was I had to much oil in the can and too much oil on the frame after he dumped it. Told him I'd wash it off when I hit the yard.

    These days with the new plastic trucks and auto adjust brakes I just don't see why anyone has problems on an inspection.

    As to the OP, the law is chain carry. The law is also 55 for trucks.

    Scuby, if you live in calif you must know chains are banned on the grapevine..They closed it down when it snows..they might let you chain up if your already up there, but most likely you wont even get up there in a storm...
