I'm considering applying for ABF Freight at the Tonawanda,NY location for City Driver and I was wondering if anybody has worked this location or any terminal on the east coast. I need to know if it's worth it and what to expect, I'm a little nervous.

Do city drivers work the dock?

Are you off on the weekends?

About how many hours a day do city driver's run?

Are city drivers forced to haul doubles on their daily routes?

How is the training in AR?

If you can get hired with no experience go for it. ABF is the type of company that you'll be able to spend an entire career at. Great pay/ benefits/retirement......

    They do some times...

    Yes

hours worked may vary , but you'll be paid overtime after 10 hours , most union shops do that.

idk about that , doubt it , they are mostly P & D

    idk

I don't work for ABF but occasionally we pull doubles to our route area and break the set on a street and deliver both trailers, probably depends on the area

My brother in law works for abf in Baltimore...City drivers can work the dock...for the most part the line haul guys pull the doubles, but anything is possible....he is off on weekends and the hours a day can vary.Good company to work for.

ot after 8, on a 5 day workweek. ot after 10 on a 4 10 hour day schedule. great job, ABF is super picky though, if you are open to suggestions, put in at YRC freight, New Penn, and Holland as well.

I doubt you ever see doubles driving unless you are given to opportunity to be a road driver. I have hear that they are looking to expand their road board though, as right now they only have 2 guys on it.

No need to be nervous. Thats a good LTL to have an opportunity to work at. If I wasn't at UPS I would drive for ABF.

I actually worked for them for about a month in Brooklyn thinking that was the LTL job to have around here and turns out I couldn't get out of there fast enough. I pretty much decided to give up on LTL and go back to OTR/truckload after that. Dilapidated place that was run like crap.

With LTL jobs it's really on a terminal by terminal basis and how the management team runs the place more so than a company by company basis that will determine whether the job sucks or is great. I worked for a couple LTL's at more than one of their locations and had vastly different experiences (Good/bad) at different places run by the same company. You'll just have to try it and see how it goes. I'd bet it's a pretty good job and probably not too stressful out there in Buffalo though, especially if you live close and it's and easy commute.

As for the questions...again it all varies by location. Some P&D guys pull sets, work weekends, help on the dock, etc, and some don't do any of that. Some places will give you an AM start time 5 days a week and some places you're on call and schedule will vary. I didn't attend their driving school since I was hired as an "experienced" driver with more than 2 years in but I'm sure it's top notch training.
