I have experience working as a household mover from before I got my CDL. Now that I have my CDL, I think I wouldn't mind working for a moving company doing long haul moves. Aside from driving the truck, you also assume the role of team leader for the packing/moving process.

It's hard work in between the driving.

Wondering if any of our posters have experience working in this segment and if they have any thoughts on it. Specifically, what is fair pay for this type of job and what are the better companies?

I'm looking at a job ad advertising 75k, a "great benefits package", paid hotels when on the road and two weeks of paid vacation. Is this fair pay for this type of work?

Most of these moving outfits require you to own your own truck or lease one from them. Be very wary of any lease or lease/purchase programs. They are not set up to benefit the driver.

The one from the job ad I mentioned is driving a company truck with supposedly good insurance and 401k.

I worked for an Allied Van agent here in my area, drove company trucks. I did all of 2 OTR runs for them, and absolutely hated each one. I got paid the going rate of the day back then. But when I got to the agent in another area, I had to call first to let them know I was coming into the area. They were supposed to set me up with thier workers for the unloading, and they did, but Jesus, I had to watch over them like a hawk.

We didn't have cell phones back then, or Qualcomm, so I had to get to a pay phone and call that local agent. We had to run furniture up 4 flights of stairs, no elevators whatsoever!

All for my lousy pay. They can pay all the 401k they want, and by today's standards, you're better off with your own, not thiers, and they can pay all the BC/BS they want, but unless when you get to the other location, and the agent there has GOOD to GREAT help?

I'd walk away from ANY moving jobs.
