I am currently employed as a new OTR driver for a large mid-west Co. I live in the northeast and although I have only 3 mos. experience, I have an opportunity to land a local T/T job getting home each day and weekends off.
My question is how to leave my job the right way with an option to return someday and no negs on my DAC. The company I work for has been good and honest with me. Its just the home time

im sure others will correct me if im wrong but i would think this would go for all jobs, give them plenty of notice and explain why your leaving. don't just one day not show up. id give at least a month but not more than 2 months and less than 2 weeks. this gives them time to find another driver but being a large Midwest company that probably wont be a problem. just be professional and every thing should work out.

Think it through first and make sure it is what you want to do. Are you sure you have this job because 3 months is not much exp and JB is the only one I know of that will hire you with 3 months for a solo job? My company hires with little or no exp, but there are not many out there that do that. If this is what you want then give them a notice like you would any other job and turn the truck in clean wherever they tell you to drop it. Many guys quit OTR only to find that the local gig they are looking at is not cracked up to be what they thought. Then they go back OTR. If you are exp that is not a problem, but with only 3 months that can be an issue. Good luck! keep us posted.:mcool:

Thanks for the feedback and I am giving it a lot of thought. The local company is small about 8 tractors and a dedicated 240 mi (one way) run
I am happy with the OTR company and its just the home time issue with me.
so I plan to go slowly and keep what I have until im sure.

I have done a little bit of everything and locals are nice, but sometimes you only have time to get home eat, shower and sleep and do it all over again. True you sleep in your own bed, but it is dark when you leave in the winter and dark when you get home. Not much time for anything else.

Once you have made up your mind to make the switch, if you do, write a nice letter of resignation, thanking the company for the opportunity they gave you. Tell them you are moving to a company where you will be home every day blah blah blah, you get the idea.

Don't think they will give a rats ###, because they won't. But it will look good in your employee file should you wish to go back to them.

Also, two weeks notice is quite ample. I assure you, they would give you zero notice if they were kicking you out. Two weeks is enough to give them and will avoid the notation "quit without notice" in your jacket.

I agree with the last poster. Being home every day is nice, but often you actually get less time to yourself than you do if you are OTR.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Well I made my move and resigned my OTR job. The company seemed ok with it I have to return the tractor to there terminal and get myself home, but they are giving me a load to take out there. I really have no complaints with them.
I start my local job next week and hope all goes well, at least I left the door
open if I want to return. Thanks for your imput and advise.

Good, it is always important to leave on good terms. You never know what life has in store for you.

So, I turned in my tractor and all related stuff, but first I had to deliver a load to their terminal which was delayed 7hrs on the loading dock, so I had to meet another driver for a relay, then they gave me another live load, which
totally messed up by getting home arrangements, but I did leave the right way and they didn,t even ask me why.I guess it happens so often.
I parked my tractor in a line of unused tractors about 200 ft long.

considered appropriate and shouldn't give you a bad rap. But like the other driver said, make sure it's what you want. A dedicated run sounds great along with more home time. That's exactly what I do. I wouldn't have it any other way.
