You can use white out on a log sheet..... DOT has no rules about not using whiteout..... you should still initial above thought.....
Now "company policy" will come into play here because some do not allow white out.... Again that is "company policy" not federal dot law......

Now you say at the end of the night to rewrite it.... well I agree with you but far as during the day one does not need to rewrite it if a mistake is made..... And using whiteout instead of crossing out is a "legal" way to make a correction on a log sheet...
I never had an issue with having my logs checked... and let me tell you I have had them checked a lot.... basically all they want to see is back to your last 34hr break.... Some check back more and a few times I also had a few small spots of whiteout (I usually do rewrite though at the end of the day) and never once have they made an issue of it... long as all the information is on there then It's a good log..... -
WOW!!! I had no idea as a newbie what was really needed for this. Looking at everything you and Hawker listed I should just go find my duffle bag and shower shoes (LMAO). I really appreciate the heads up from you all. Its a good reminder of why I am a member to this board. -
I always carried an extra blank Bill of Lading, you just never know when you might need one
J Rich Thanks this. -
I know this thread is old and I do not intend to reignite it. But I did want to point out, since the thread still pops up near the top in Google search results, that FMCSA has provided the following guidance on this:
Question 12: May a driver use “white-out” liquid paper to correct a record of duty status entry?
Guidance: Any method of correction would be acceptable so long as it does not negate the obligation of the driver to certify by his or her signature that all entries were made by the driver and are true and correct.

- The initials ARE a good idea as it makes it harder for someone to forge an entry. But this is ONLY if you are consistent in using initials to indicate that you approve the change. If you forget to initial even one time it will make it 100 times easier for a lawyer will point to it and use it to prove you could have made the change.
My personal view on whiteout is that since is is acceptable to the FMCSA, then use it. Use the whiteout tape applicator and it will look very neat and tidy. easy for the officer to read and will leave little to question. If your logbook is a mess, the officer may feel that you are sloppy in your work and that they will have an easy time finding other things to get you on.
A neat logbook is a sign to the officer that you are squared away. -
White out won’t work on a computer screen.
Swiss Mountain Dog and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
I suspect hand written logs will require whiteout more often when they do get used, on those rare occasions that the system is down. A lack of practice and all that. -
There are places that require PPE. Yes even in a dry van. These places require at a minimum of a Hard Hat, and Safety Vest. Others also require safety glasses, long sleeves, long pants, and steel toe boots. Most the time you can get by with regular "work boots". They don't accept tennis shoes or flip flops as work boots.
One of our new drivers found out the hard way about PPE last week. He was told lose the shorts, tennis shoes and get a hard hat and vest. Well he didn't, and got rejected at the local steel mill.Swiss Mountain Dog and Justrucking2 Thank this. -
LOL, tennies in a steel mill. that's awesome.
I'm actually sitting here waiting for the mail man to show up with my new composite toed boots. I opted for a pair that also has puncture resistant soles. to many #### mesquite thorns where I live.
Take a look if you want (https://amzn.to/2xmrqGV) Kevlar insoles. I am offering no recommendation as they haven't even arrived. But I may after a few months of use if I end up keeping them. If they don't fit well, they will be going back. This model isn't offered in wides like I normally order.J Rich Thanks this.
