I go over a bridge with gross over 79k. There is the limit 52 or 56k. $3600 out of my pocket.

    Was that posted?

There is a road, that just happens to bypass the I57 scales south of 80. There is no weight restriction but a non-posted length restriction. The state cop told our guy that we need to buy, or have, some local county truck route atlas to know it is there.

That road is IL Rt. 50. To bypass those scales, (going south) some guys get off at exit 335 by the truck stops & go east to the T intersection at Rt 50, then go south through Monee & at the south end of Peotone, there's a flashing red light/stop sign. Take a right going back west straight back to I-57 at exit 327.

I don't recommend it though. The local cops will pull you over. If you've got a legitimate reason to be on that section of Rt 50, then it's ok but if they know you're going around the scale, they'll probably call the bears at the scale house to come out for a rectal probing.

I got stopped in the middle of Peotone on Rt. 50. I'd just left Manteno with an empty trailer, going to University Park which is immediately north of Monee. It was shortest & most direct just to stay on Rt. 50. I explained this to the cop & he let me go, but he said "next time take I-57".

A better way to bypass those scales, although it takes longer, is to get off on Rt 30 west (exit 340) & take it 5.5 miles west to US 45 & run that south for 19.3 miles to the flashing red light & small gas station/truck stop in Manteno. Take a left there (onto 9000 road) & go east 1.2 miles & get on I-57 south at exit 322.
It adds 8.2 miles to your trip. The route is reversible if you're headed north.

At its intersection with W 37th Street, the S Ashland Ave bridge is posted for 22 ton single vehicle and 28 ton combination vehicle limits.

Well I did not read all of the responses so this may been covered but if you do not have one of those maps and in question and you see a Fire Dept Stop and ask them the best route. Done that before.

    Thanks for the info.

I pull trailers off the rail yard and drag them down to the candy place in manteno. Currently it is called kenco, prior it was 4Ts management. Most times a cat scale ticket is included with the bills. I can compare the bill weight with the air pressure gauge on my volvo drives to estimate the tandem weight.

I exit 57 at monee to top off the refr before dropping the trailer and would just take 50 the rest of the way.

For those that run OTR national, how can you be expected to have every single county atlas for the entire U.S. to check for over length restrictions? The Rand Atlas does mention anything ...

First off where are you coming from? I know the overpass that carries I90/I94 over Irving Park Road is either 13'5 or 13'6 I forgot exactly.
it's the Chicago truck routing service. The guy that usually answers sounds like an Italian mafioso but they are very helpful.
