My husband always preferred running flatbeds. The last 2 companies have been vans.. and he really likes the company he is with.. but I know the day is coming... hopefully a long way off... when he will go looking for a skateboard again.

Its in his blood and he looks longingly at every nice flat rig that goes by.

ASK ME HOW I KNOW.

I was a car hauler. Basically it's a double decker skateboard the moves! And I'll agree with others here that the challenge of it is one of the benefits. Sure is nice when you get the load right. Right now I'm a food pusher for Sysco. But I do miss hauling cars.

So is a flatbed physically more demanding because the driver is responsible for securing the load? Are there less lumpers involved in flatbeds?

Load securement. Most of our stuff is loaded/unloaded with forklifts or cranes.

So it seems like most drivers consider it a "different breed" of driving, huh?

I'll have to add some questions to my interview schedule about flatbedding experience.

Dan, flatbedding is a different world! For those who have done it, there is a certain "high" that comes into play that doesn't happen hauling vans.

The only lumpers I've ever had were on one load of onions that needed to be restacked. They were loaded in a lite drizzle and rained all the way to Houston. No chance to open the end flaps and let the load dry.
