Flatbedders: In it for the money?

I'm curious, does anybody here flatbed for the money? If you got into flatbed for the money, is that why you stay?

I hear a lot of the newer drivers and students saying they want to pull a skateboard because it's better money, but I don't think they consider all the extra work that goes into it.

I'll be the first to admit the money caught my attention, but now that I flatbed it's hard to imagine going back to van. I really enjoy the challenge it brings. I don't think the little bit of extra pay is worth it, to be honest; the money is not why I stay.

What about you?

I'm with you. I enjoy the challenge and while I've tried a lot of different trailers flat is where I feel at home.

The money's good but I also view it as a "Workout Program" better than Jack LaLanne

I just started with flatbedding, after years of experience with dry van and reefer. Lots of work, but it is a good challenge AND workout! And I have to say, so far, I've met alot of great flatbedders who didn't hesitate to help me out with good advice and tips. Not trying to cut down other truck drivers, just telling it like it is!

Flatbedders are a different breed. I have pulled vans, tankers, and flats. Flatbed drivers do seem to be more polite and helpful to other truckers. Even flatbedders from other co's. I have always been the outdoors type. Flatbedding compared to pulling a van is just that. It is like a van is an office worker. They get out of their cubicle, but spend most of their time in the box or the cab. Flatbedders are outside with the elements and I like that. I also like the workout I get. To me flatbedding is the way to go. I had pulled flats before maverick, just never had a spread or had to tarp before.

I liked pulling flatbeds. I just got to the point where, physically, I could not handle the tarping. So now I pull reefer.
