I love having my dog with me on the road, however it is a lot of extra responsibility. If you dont have an apu, I would think twice about leaving your dog in a hot truck especially with todays fuel prices. they are good for exercise though.

about once every three months I buy a cheap rug to cover the whole floor. in the winter time it gets dirty quick.also get a dust buster they are about 40bucks at walmart, good for twice a day use to suck up dog hair and dirt. keep some dog towels for when it rains. keep mt jugs for water that you can fill up at the fuel islands.also for washing dogs feet in the winter.(salt from roads eat their paws up) get some advantage or something like it for fleas. rest stops and truckstops have lots of fleas. ask your vet for a supply lf metranitazole(not sure if thats how you spell it) this is so when your dog gets diarrhea give them one pill and stops them up. keep an extra blanket or sheet on the bed so your bed doesnt get dirty while your driving. try to compile a list of emergency vet clinics wherever you travel..there are many good perks to having a pet but a few of the tougher ones are when you break down and have to make arrangements with a pet. if you get in an accident. when you are in a state that has anti idling laws. and also some shippers and receivers dont allow pets. sorry I hope this helps, just trying to give you alot of info quickly. oh yeah, the desert will burn there feet and there are sandspurs in texas.

I am curious too. I would think a food/water dish that dont slip/slide. Either that, or a single bowl for food and then like a water bottle that would allow only water s/he wants to flow..maybe something like a water bottle like what a hamster has. I was thinking a little bed for him/her to laydown in. Any dog you get should be pretty nimble to walk around the truck while moving. I am interested, as I have a Jack Russell Terrier. She can be pretty hyper, but as long as i pay attention to her once in a while, she dont get too crazy. The more you excersise him/her, the less hyper they will be. I can drive in my 4- wheeler 2 hours without any problems. She looks around then lays down. I couldn't imagine not having her on the road with me once i go solo.

so far so good, im not looking to get one this week. maybe in sept, or more in the fall, id rather have a dog over the winter rather then the summer, its the heat im concerned about, u can bunble up as much as you want during the winter, in the summer u can only strip soo far.
i like the advise so far, ill keep checking back to see what others have to say about
thanks

My recommendation to you is to forget about getting a pet until you have run over the road for awhile...

You have no idea how your life is going to change, and adding the stresses of a new dog will not help!

Six months over the road you will have an idea whether you really want to start training a dog in the truck.

And yes I do have a dog (Doberman/Whippet X), the difference is I had her for a year and a half before going over the road with her.

When you do get a dog, look at something thats a shorthair.

Good luck

Good advice above. I have a great pup on the road with me now, an American Water Spaniel of 14 weeks. I would advise getting an adult/near adult dog for your first, a pup is a HUGE bother sometimes for one or even two people on a truck. Spaniels are good if you are willing to excersize them every four hours or so. You may look into a Shiba Inu, they are a breed that does not bark, and barking can get old in a hurry. One of the terrier breeds would be interesting, protective and light or even non-shedding.

In a first dog, I would look for a non-shedding breed and small side of medium. Buy ONLY premium dog food and spring/bottled water in gallons. (both being digestive concerns, and when digestion goes wrong you are in for a very, very long day) Don't get caught up with "manly" dogs, you want a companion not a ##### extension. Dogs take up more space than you may think already. Dog, food, toys, kennel/crate and accessories fill up a lot of room. I would never be without one, but I don't really rush to suggest them to others.

Best of luck.

Before you get a dog, check your company's policy on pets first. Some want a deposit for a pet, that you most likely won't get back and some won't even allow it. Pets can do a lot of damage to a truck and you should be responsible for that damage. The company i work for won't allow it and after seeing the truck that changed their minds i can understand their decision on this.

Oh I also forgot the 4 am "walks" which will become routine, regardless of how tough your day was or how bad you need sleep....

Dont take this decision lightly its a large responsibility that you cant just forget about if its inconvenient...
