I'm not saying this driver didn't do a proper pre-trip but.....

Something sure as hell went wrong here! I actually posted this in another thread when I should have started one as this is something that I have not paid much attention to like I should and after seeing the wheels come off this loaded log trailer going down the highway, I think I and everyone on the road around me would be better off if I did a better job of checking the wheel and axle assembly on every trailer I hook to from now on.

Now don't get me wrong, I always do a quick visual, kick the tires and such but you seasoned hands out there hopefully can give some tips on what to look for to prevent such a potential catastrophe out on the road.

I was driving down I-71 in Ohio a few weeks ago and saw one of those.
It was in a busy area of road construction, and the wheels came off a Dart trailer. It took several minutes for anyone to contact the driver, and even then he did not believe them, until he stopped and checked.
The duels came off the drivers side, crossed into the center of the road where workers were, separated, then one fell, and the other crossed over the North bound lanes to stop on the other side.

I was just happy that they did not hit anyone. There were allot of workers in the middle, where they are adding more lanes, and plenty of traffic going North bound.

i would say if there was oil in the hub, then only way you could have known was to have checked for heat after a few miles. when a bearing goes, they just seize up and go.

Yup, that is not what happened with the Dart trailer though. They stay together as a duel most of the time when they shear like the ones in the photos. The Dart one was missing nuts. It just plain came off.

Reminds me of a few weeks ago. I got my truck back from the shop and went out on my run. After one stop, I casually looked at the lugnuts of one of my wheels and something didn't seem right. I could see a bunch of dirt but a sliver of something shiney so I reached down and touched the lug nut and was actually able to turn it...easily! Freaked, I started grabbing all the lug nuts on all the wheels and found another one that was also loose...apparently it wasn't tighted up that well. I guess with 10 lug nuts, 1 isn't going to make a huge impact...still I wasn't happy with seeing that.

THEN I felt dumb because I had to find a place to simply torque on the lug nuts...how do you do that...I mean, do ya pay for it? lol.

A wheel/tire came off a trailer yesterday on I95 near Philly, jumped over the median and struck a mini van, killing the woman driver instantly. Can't imagine how that driver feels.

I've heard of this happening where the driver gets charged with negligent homocide.
