Here is a little heads up on being locked out of your truck and how to get back in. if you drive a truck that has a small side window on it and the door is locked all you have to do is get a pair of plyers or grips and grab the black knobby thing on the outside and twist to the left and it will open the side window ableing you to grab the door handle and open the door. if you drive a freightliner columbia there is also a small hole on the bottom of the door in which you can stick a clothes hanger into and the door will pop open. takes a little practice to get this down but after a few times trying it and doing it it becomes easier.
Now on the downside with this knowledge it means a truck with side window is never truely secure. there are things you can do while you are in it to make sure nobody can get in it like i have seen a locking mechanisim that attaches to both door handles preventing the doors from being opened even with the key.
Best thing to do to keep from getting locked out is to have an extra key made and always keep it in your pocket and that way you will not be standing around look for pliers or a coat hanger. another good way is to place a spare key under the hood somewhere or outside on the truck out of view. i personally keep one on a key chain in my left pocket and just in case i forget i have one placed under the hood out of view that i only know where it is.

Most all keys are the same for the same make of truck so you can go around at the truck stop and ask other drivers if you could borrow their key for your truck if you locked you keys in it. Also I carry spare keys to each kind of truck with me

the international is bad about that. -
You might find keys from different FLDs that will work, but 4 Columbias from the same place, the same year, none of the keys interchange. The small hole at the bottom of the door can be plugged with putty, and turning the vent window knob won't work with a Columbia, at least not with the one I had.
The Star has no vent windows, and none of the other similar keys I have will unlock it, I need to get another key or two made for it.
Supposedly any Pete key will open another Pete, but I have never had to try that. The seat belt through the door handle will secure any truck I have ever driven. I drove Binders but not enough to have figured out how to get in if needed, you also supposedly can't lock a Volvo with the key in the ignition. Mack probably would be similar to the Volvo now. -
I always have two keys. one stays in the ignition switch and the other is always on my beltloop. That way I dont get locked out in the cold.
