n00B in NYC! My.02

Well, the time has come. Since starting my driving career 10 months ago, I havent found myself in NYC except for Long Island(but that doesnt count since its not in the heart of the city).

Now, I am right here smack dab in the middle of Manhattan. Ave of Americas and 46th ave to be exact.

My opinion of this city is as follows. It isnt as bad as people make it out to be. Take it slow, easy, and pay attention. Did I mention take it slow? Its like a giant ant mound here with people walking all over the place. Id rahter hit a car than hit a person, but Id rather not do either. I am not afraid to roll through NYC in 6th gear. I wont hesitate to stop where I am, put on hazards, and figure out where I am if I get lost. Dont rush anything and youll be just fine.

I listened to drivers piss and moan about NYC and its insanely tight streets, stupid drivers, careless people, ect... I was really nervous when I entered the city, but I had my head screwed on tight and quickly learned what I needed to do to get through this place un-scathed.

Dont be afraid to hold up traffic! If you wait for people to clear out of your way, youll be waiting for a very long time. People wont yeild to you. You have to take some initiative when turning, changing lanes, parking...

Just stay alert and take it slow and you'll be alright.

Good advise, now if people will only listen.

I'm told turn signals don't matter much in NYC, but if you hold out your hand and look at them, they'll stop for you. I know the turn signal part's true from my one trip where I wasn't even driving, but have only been told of the second part from a few drivers at the company.

Yeah, traffic signals dont matter much either! Im really suprised I didnt see a wreck with these way these people drive. I was actually laughing at people scurrying across the street narrowly avoiding being hit by that speeding taxi cab who didnt slow down one bit!, Here ya go. Green means Mach 1, yellow means floor it!, and red sometimes means stop.
All in all, it was a good learning experience and was like watching a tv show right in front of me.

Get off the main streets in Brooklyn or the Bronx and you may change your mind. But you have the right attitude, slow and easy. I've been to sections of NYC that are easy and some that will have you pulling your hair out. Some of the alley docks in the garment district of Manhattan are impossible to get into with anything larger than a 24 ft straight truck.

I delivered to a missionary place in the Bronx... A truck load of food that was to be given out.. Well lets just say this was not on main street and was not easy to get to at all... Directions were a joke and had to make my own way there... NY is not easiest place to drive in with all the low bridges ext... What gets me about NY is it says "blank road" you get off and you have to make 10 more turns with 20 more cross streets before your actually on "blank road"...... This is where you have to guess and hope you make the right choice.... The person giving directions will not tell you at all about these little sections.. they just say get off at Blank road and follow it...

I have spent some time in NY and its not all that bad... Even been downtown pretty much... You know the sections where you can only see buildings far as they eye can see... Pretty cool going threw there in a big truck... Taxi drivers you have to watch out for but you make it know that your needed the space he is in by taking his extra space away he gets the ideal pretty fast... The other cars I really had no problem with... they seemed like they was expecting me to do something crazy... I guess the locals must have them somewhat trained far as the local streets go..
