Question: Canadian working under US DOT?

Not quite sure what the question is that you're asking, serp. When you mention DOT, it immediately brings up images of the HOS (hours of service) rules, which are slightly different in Canada than the US.

To the best of my knowledge (based on current regulations) you are required to be in compliance with the rules of whatever country, state or province you are in at the time. So yes, you could run under the Canadian HOS rules, but as soon as you crossed the border, you would be subject to US DOT rules, and could find that you are in violation.

We were always told that, if we even THOUGHT we would be running cross-border, to run under US DOT rules all the time, that way we'd never end running too many hours.

 

Really not sure of what the original question is, although I think it has something to do with paying for U.S. authority with $CDN? If so, there's no advantage. In fact it usually costs more as we get screwed on the exchange rate 99 times out of 100.

As far as always running under U.S. HOS ... be careful! You can end up being in violation in Canada because of the 36-hour reset and the fact that it is mandatory up here (as opposed to the U.S. where you can continue to run after reaching your 70 hours as you recoup the hours run from seven days prior).

If running trans-border it is best to understand the HOS in each country and the implications of your current HOS each time you cross the border.

 

For the most part I run the USA rules with the exception of my resets are always a 36 hour to satisfy both the Canadian and Usa regulations.

I will step it up when I cross the border into Canada, and the extra 2 hours of running can help me out to get where I need to be (Usually home) , but I still need to make sure that I have a 10 hour rest/off duty time prior to crossing the border back to the USA.

Basically I try and run with the most stringent rules in mind making sure you are legal in the country you are currently running in.
