You have a great idea. Getting through to anyone might be a challenge. The politicians are busy hiding behind the walls of their air conditioned offices, not likely to spend any time in a rig with anyone.
E-mails,phone calls, office visits to political offices might help. My suggestion is to try to get some airtime on large local or national T.V.news.The T.V. will cover a lot of ground in a short time with good visual impact. Maybe find an energetic new member of a news team looking for a "big"story to break on the national news,or a college journalism student looking for an idea for a documentary film. Something has to be done, soon. As the California mentality takes its toll from West to East coast, the quality of life for the poor old trucker continues to decline.
As I'm sure you're aware, the trucking companies will be NO help to you. They want all idling stopped, so having laws passed to enforce it is just right for them. Some states are even considering outlawing APU use. Go figure!
The consumer could care less about the trucker. You already know that. As long as the shelves are full and there's gas at the pumps,I doubt there'll be any help from Joe Public. And,in reality, how many of us can afford to tell the company "we're not going to move any freight for a week" as we join a nationwide strike?
I doubt many politicians will be interested in helping. Allowing us to idle for comfort just isn't "green" enough for the times. The people who passed the anti-idling laws obviously don't have a clue as to the reality of being in a truck overnight, with no A/C in the summer, in almost all of the country. I remember some really hot times in SC, GA, TX, Imperial CA in August trying to sleep in the bunk of a Freightliner..Whew, I don't want to do some of those runs again! And with NO A/C! Nope...It's over for me there..No APU, No Gardair behind the wheel.. I'll probably have to buy my own truck just to have some say in the matter..Talk about being between a rock and a hard place!
You seem to be well motivated in this. I'll try to pass on any good ideas I have or hear from other drivers. Thanks again....

For those of you driving for these companies who forbid idling or allow 10% or less, the next time you're in the yard and go into the building take your tire billy and find the AC controls and do a little "work" on them! Or go out to the heat exchangers out side and relieve the coolant levels in the things so they quit working! Keep this up until they figure out that whats good for the MAIN money makers of the company is good for the owners, numbers crunchers and rule makers!
