+1. I have to admit, the road calls to me every now and then. I do miss it on occasion.

But I just got tired of putting my license, bank account and freedom on the line so some scumbag trucking company CEO could make all the money. I became fed up with constantly being stuck between the company and the DOT and always winding up on the short end of things.

I'm here to make the most amount of money with the least hassle. If that means running linehaul doubles, then that's what I'll do. And these days, I laugh at posts that claim that OTR is a 'hard job.' It's only a hard job because you let it be. Too many drivers are willing to break the law for someone else's benefit. It was fine before the DOT had tracking devices up your butt and out both ears, but now you're just being used as a buffer between the government and the company, and they'll hang you out to dry when you get caught, while they keep on raking it in.

When I finally got my first logbook ticket, I swore that I was going to find a way to run legal. And if I couldn't make a good living running that way, I was either with the wrong company or in the wrong industry. That's how I got into LTL, and I'll never look back.

But hey, you Supertruckers--keep on thinking you're Mr. Tough Guy because you're running "under the radar." And when you finally get nailed, go ahead and post up your experience. I could use the laugh.

Biscuit you lucky SOB. Good luck and glad you got back where you want to be. I am personally waiting for my hear to be up after which I will hopefully be going back to college, or possibly getting a local gig. OTR has some nice benefits, but I grew up here and there isn't much I haven't seen. I am ready to get home and have a life again.

I personally would never be remotely interested in hauling gas or any local work for that matter. I tried LTL freight and wasn't happy at all with the pay cut! If I can't put $1600 to $1800 a week in the bank I'm not interested!

That being said...I would never even consider working for one of the steering wheel holder companies like he was working for because you don't have any earning potential.

If you're gonna do this for a living, You'd better be a sharp businessman and not sell yourself for peanuts. It can be done if you dig around and find a niche that works for you and your buisness...
How do you know he shouldn't be OTR? He may have a good driving record and sound skills. You can never blame a man for wanting to better himself. Gasoline hauling is not as easy as most think. Not only do you drive in the city with a large truck but you have to deal with people in the stations that just want to cause you problems. Just like him I've been OTR and have driven alot of different types of trucks. And the one thing that bothers me the most is not getting paid for your time.

Your analogy of drivers being quite successful may be true but the numbers are very low. You've got 36 years out there and it took you time and experience to get where you are. I assume that you are an O/O by the way you speak of money. But taking a pay cut is a wrong on your part. Like I said before I make $1650 every week and I have no expenses with a truck. However, if you look at all the benefits we have compared to you I'm sorry you lag and I'd be more than willing to compare. It's not unusual for a driver like youself to retire and have over a million dollars in a CAP and savings program on top of your regular retirement.

Some people work to live and other live to work. I wanted to be with my wife and son and I was sick of all the #### OTR. I retired very early and I'm quite comfortable. If you are smart you would have protected your elderly years if not you're married to the truck. I'm glad you enjoy it so much but I do think the majority of the people enjoy retirement.

Of course I just like you went on assumptions and we shouldn't. He likes what he's doing so more power to him. But I will state one fact here and that's there are more inexperience dangerous drivers OTR than hnauling gasoline. Plus with hauling gasoline you have a chance to move up and make more money. Mid level gasoline drivers are making more than alot of OTR drivers and are tasked with more responsibility. So it's a specialized field that's isn't for everyone. And I guess you fall into that category. That's ok because we need you there. But don't blame a man for wanting to better himself. And as far as him working for the bottom feeders, he's explained why that is. It could happen to you if you stopped driving for a few years too. Where you going to be in 20 years?

Actually, I liked the getting out of the truck and moving around part. It was the stink I hated. Guess it's my feminine side coming out. I don't mind getting dirty, but I hate when I can't get clean. Even after scrubbing vigorously in the shower, I still stank of gas. Especially my hair. Maybe I just wasn't using the right soap, who knows?
