    FedEx Home Delivery and Ground: My Experience these last two months + Day Cab info

    Hi everyone. Happy Holidays to you and your families. I wanted to give you some inside information on FedEx Home Delivery and Ground. I currently work for Home Delivery driving a box van. I applied for the seasonal position but I am told that I will be picked up as permanent.

    I do up to 180 stops a day at $1.20 per stop. My contractor has numerous routes. Our facility I am told was designed for 12,000 per day and there were days we had hit 20,000 packages, far exceeding the limits but we managed to get them delivered for Christmas.

    A little bit about contractors for both Ground and Home Delivery. They are paid by FedEx to load their trucks (these owners can either keep the load pay, which I believe is $15-30 per truck), they are also paid per stop + mileage and other incentives as well. They own or lease their vans/trucks and then hire drivers to operate them. Some contractors provide benefits but most don't is what I am told.

    The guys I trained with all had Class A's and are driving Penske rentals to cover this busy holiday season. One of them was smart and spoke with contractors at the ground facility while fueling his truck. He has 6 years under his belt driving big rigs. He was then hired to train part time driving from Sacto to Stockton doing line haul one day a week. Looks like he is getting picked up by this contractor. Don't know what his pay is (been busy so really haven't had time to chat with him), but he did get in with ground line haul.

    I am told that once you are in FedEx, even through a contractor, it is MUCH easier to transfer to Express or Custom Critical from within the company, providing there are jobs in your respective area. I have been told by a couple of guys at the ground facility that drive big rigs, they waited by the exit and spoke with drivers exiting to get info on jobs. Just another way to get into driving for ground.



    As for my schooling, I have not had the time to attend school. I did locate one that will accept the WIA program and get it paid for but I have been working 6 days per week this whole time (hence why I haven't posted here at all since I've started), so I haven't even had the time to go to the WIA (Workforce Investment Act) and complete the orientation for the program so I can begin attending drivers training. I did locate a school which said that I can get a LOCAL driving job, without trying to push me off on some of the bigger OTR companies.     In the meantime, I am contacting a supervisor I know at Conway to see if I can get in their for Doc Work while I practice for my CDL and do schooling after work. Also applied at a produce delivery company driving a straight truck just using my class C license.

    As I get more information and closer to achieving my goal of becoming a full time driver, I will keep you posted.

    Also, since being in the industrial area of the city and having to take 2 freeways to get to my route, I have made a list of a TON of day cab local & national companies. Once I have time to type it all up with URL's, I will post it on here for everyone that is looking to stay close to home for a local driving gig.

    You most likely have a writer's talent with that lucent and lengthly driving article. Maybe you can combine the two of them and make even more $.

    Be careful how you play your cards. I believe that WIA primarily focuses on those that are unemployed.

    Really surfer dude....... you should look more into your writing talents and forget trucks. Be much more money and a whole lot less grief IMO.

    I was wondering why I had a hard time reading that. It actually used puncuatuion & I think everything was spelled correctly. I think he's on the wrong website.

    My wife is the writer in the family. But thanks for the props.

    Again, I will post a list separately from this post which provides names and links to all the day cab local companies I have kept track of while on my route.

    BTW went into work only to check my SMS and find out that we don't have enough volume today, so I am back at home. Should have check SMS BEFORE I left for work.

    A buddy of mine worked for the FedEx Home Del. & Ground out of Cody, WY. I think he drove for them for a year or two and the out of town driver. He loved it. Said he's been to some pretty amazing awesome ranches he had never known to exist out in the middle of nowhere. Many 100-200 mile trips were for only one or two small boxes.
