52% Unemployment among young adults

Young, unemployed and facing tough future

Quote:
The unemployment rate for young Americans has exploded to 52.2 percent -- a post-World War II high, according to the Labor Dept. -- meaning millions of Americans are staring at the likelihood that their lifetime earning potential will be diminished and, combined with the predicted slow economic recovery, their transition into productive members of society could be put on hold for an extended period of time.

While I agree with much said in this article, I also know first hand WHY many of these young adults are not working...

It has alot to do with this "I'm too (insert excuse here) to work at McDonalds/Wendys/Taco Bell ", etc. attitude they seem to have.

Many of them think that they should BEGIN by being paid the same wages as a manager, and/or someone with more experience, so they opt to not accept a job when offered them, instead whine about there not being any work out there...

Just sayin'..

Yes, I'm basing this observation on where my young adult kids live, and some of their friends. To a one, they have been offered jobs starting out at the fast food places, and have turned them down!

"I ain't workin' for no peanuts, man!", etc. And then sit around, whining about no work...I don't go around them much ( the friends), cuz I wanna smack 'em, every time I hear them whining about not having a job! LOL

I'm started to see more and more of those signs, everywhere.

On the upside though. There were 3 legitimate ads for OTR drivers in our paper this morning.

And the US Census has started calling in some of those who applied

So, they are at fault for not finding jobs like most people seem to think?

No, not at all. At least not in my area.

It has caused them issues with getting jobs though. They don't want to take the lowly job at first. And when they finally decide it actually puts money in their pocket, it's too late. Someone else that's willing to take it immediately, has.

Many people in my area are depressed about the delayed opening of the new Toyota plant. I always tell them the same thing. Would you really want to compete with the 50,000 other people moving here from out of state, during these hard economic times?

This downturn hasn't affected us as deeply as other parts of the US. The delay of Toyota, has actually increased the chance that locals will get those jobs when it opens.

Also...I'm seeing many young adults/couples move back in with their parents. Something that would have shamed them (in their own minds), just a year ago.

Well, I have seen that these jobs at McDonalds and other minimum wage jobs are even being filled by older people out of desparation. It is hard to compete against the number of unemployed out there.

If they can live at home with their parents and get free room and board
why would they want to work? Its easy to sit around the house smoking
dope and letting sombody else pay all the bills.Have you ever noticed all
the fat kids hanging out everywhere.Lots of free food and no exercice. In
a few years they will find out the hard way that life aint a free ride.
