Did Detroit fudge facts on auto mileage?

Quote:
Yes, a former GM economist says. Consumer research was manipulated to show buyers wanted big, gas-guzzling vehicles -- the automakers' most profitable.

Detroit insisted for years that customers preferred big, gas-guzzling SUVs and pickups -- which were also their most profitable vehicles.

Actually, a former General Motors (MTLQQ) economist says, the opposite was true -- and he, along with others, helped fudge all the data.

As Energy & Environment News reported, GM often received outside data during the 1990s showing that consumers were interested in fuel economy.

That guy is a froot loop.

Of course Americans wanted gas guzzling pickup trucks and SUV's and GM couldn't make enough of them, right up until mid 2000, when the price of gas skyrocketed from about a dollar a gallon to $1.50.

All of a sudden GM got caught with its' pants down. People didn't want trucks and SUV's--they wanted fuel efficient cars--which GM basically had none. And with a design life-cycle of 5 to 7 years, none were in the pipeline either.

That's what happened to GM.
