No I kid not! stop spending money you do not have.
Irresponsible money management should "sting",living on credit
should not be the American way

Yes I am a Life Long American that has never owned a Credit Card
Overdraft fees and "credit" aren't the same thing.
Overdraft fees is for spending more money than you have, credit is extended so people will spend more money than they will make.

If they pay their balance off each month, how much interest are they paying?

That said, BOA has purposely held charges, to cause overdraft. Say what you will but it seems they hold the small charges for up to 2 weeks until they can hit you with OD.

I went into a Flying J, after checking card for $ and bought a drink and some chips, around 3.00 of stuff, on debit. We went in later at the same flying J and got something to eat, around 26.00.

The 26.00 charge posted that day, the 3.00 charge was held 7 days, until we were at a low balance and then they hit us with it, and a 35.00 fee. I sat and watched them do it again about a month ago, we made a bunch of purchases with the card, all but 4 of the lowest purchases posted same day, yet the 4 lowest purchases, totalling 24.00 were held and ALL OF THEM posted on the day we paid our mortgage, overdrafting us. They hit us for 35.00 each one, yet these purchases were made 2 weeks before. And the funny thing of it is that when you make the purchase, and its pending, the 'amount available' is taking into consideration most pending charges but not those ones.

Hence why we no longer send our money to BOA.
That's what I mean by abuse, when they purposely scam people. I've seen them hold a bunch of little charges like that until payday then hit the account when your paycheck is auto deposited. They put in all the charges, send the account into the hole, charge double overdraft fees on each one, then deposit what's left of your pay. You better be paying attention too, cause if you make a big purchase or pay all the bills for the month not realizing that a large chunk of your pay has just been stolen, you'll end up in the hole again with double overdraft fees on every charge. Then they start charging fees for being in the hole they put you in.

Banks like that need to be hit with criminal charges if you ask me.

Yeah, at first I was convinced I was screwing up somehow, I check the account before I buy anything BoA has a mobile account program I use to use on my cell. So before I went in I checked the balance, as it was supposed to be utd but after the first over draft I noticed that indeed, the balance excluded most pending charges >5.00 conveniently enough. I also noted, going back several months a pattern of mismatched dates to locations line I could stop and get drinks in Memphis, then buy dinner in Shreveport, grab something from a walmart in Tyler and the Shreveport and Tyler charge would hit first, and weeks later, it would show the Memphis one which of course made me at first go wtf I wasnt in Memphis on such and such day...

Since switching to the netspend prepaid account, our charges are -always- in the right order, and always post within 24 hours. And the available balance is -always- right.

I find it interesting to hear everyone's problems with Bank of America. They have never done me wrong. I did have a problem once with my mortgage (Countrywide screwed up, not BofA). It seems they changed a date on one of the ebills and it caused my mortgage to be taken out twice. I caught it on the day it happened and called BofA. The guy I talked to told me he couldn't stop it from going through because it was already scheduled in the system but had me reschedule all my other bills and take out everything I could in cash before the bill hit. Once the money was redeposited by Countrywide, they refunded all the overdraft charges and I redeposited all my cash. Since then I do not have large bills like my mortgage automatically paid by ebill, I schedule a payment monthly instead so this can not happen again.

The guy that helped me gave me a direct line to contact him to get this fixed once all the money was refunded since he had knowledge of the problem. I have never had a bank go out of their way to help me in a situation like that before.

Yup, thats how I started using it. We tried Walmart money card first, because well Walmart is convenient, but they nickle and dime too much. 3.00 for an atm withdrawal on top of the atm fees!

So we switched to Netspend, I've used them before when I used to sell/buy on ebay (I grossed like 10k a month before selling on ebay before china corps took over and underpriced everyone lol... used to spend quite a bit there too).

I love the simplicity of Netspend, cannot OD, well we actually CAN OD, because we direct deposit our paychecks into it they give us a 10 dollar OD cushion, we are 'premier' Netspend account (Also allows larger amounts to be stored on card). No OD fees period. And they give us a 5% yield savings account too.

The ONLY reason we still have a BOA account is because the car rental company we use a bunch will not accept prepaid debit and we both turned off our normal credit cards a long long time ago...

As for BoA customers being happy, thats great! I am glad to hear it, stick with them if you aren't seeing the same bs we were. But we are hardly the only BoA people who see this. We are small time account users, perhaps you are grossing more in your account or have a savings account with enough cash they care more about you lol.

We did have a Countrywide mortgage, its now a Bank of America mortgage. I will note that Bank of America has been FAR more willing to negociate new mortgage terms then Countrywide.

I agree B of A sucks, but I can fix your problem with the overdrafts you describe. Instead of calling the bank before purchases, run a check book style ledger. Call to verify deposits, reconcile your bank statement each month, and even if they stack debits, you'll have already accounted for the money and it won't hurt you.
