Found this website the other day. Has lots of good info for new drivers on securing coils, rods and pipe. Just click on the "driver support" tab up top and scroll down to "securement"

Most places won't let you put a chain over top of coil so just use a strap instead.

But you are correct, straps make more sense to me due to the thin material. -
