    Hey ya all,

Been driving van now for USX for just over a year and I feel I finaly have enough road experience to make the move to flatbed (my original goal when I started driving). I've narrowed my list down to two companies that will train and that hire in my area (Southwestern NY), Melton or TMC. What are your opinions on the two (pay, miles, hometime, equipment, apu's, tolls etc...). Any advice and/ or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I worked for Melton for 2.8 years TMC goes to all same places as Melton and me being a talker lol Pay at TMC percentage seems to be more but that is what i heard from drivers so who knows i will leave that at about the same . Hometime i believe TMC is better home weekends.. Melton 1 day off for 7 out and you better keep track most Mel drivers told me they try to short you and tried to short me ..Equipment both are nice..never had a problem with Melton fixing any repair i needed TMC has nicer trailers (newer) APU don't think TMC has them .. most Melton trucks do ..tolls ? The only bad thing i ever heard about TMC is that the owner is VERY anal about keeping the truck clean ...O yes Melton will give you a truck right away as long as they see you get how to tie down the load ..TMC i believe will send you out with a trainer for some time 4 weeks maybe ?

I'm gonna cast a vote for TMC, as i used to work for them (I left before the trucks got cut down to 60-62 or whatever they're at). You're in Bath, I was in Binghamton at the time and was home 99% of weekends and occasionally during the week. Can't complain about that. TMC has (or had, this was a few years ago) tons of freight coming up and down 81, across 86/17, up and down 390... I would get aluminum from Massena headed for Detroit, steel of various sizes from Nucor in Auburn or Chemung headed all over, plastic pipe from National Pipe in Vestal...the list goes on. MOST of these places I'd never seen a Melton truck, and in NY's Southern Tier I still see 3 TMC trucks for every 1 Melton.

I think their freight lanes around here are better than Melton, I like their equipment (not that Melton's is bad). I don't know where they are now pay-wise but I was making %31 for most of my employment. I pretty heavily stayed to the Northeast, and quite a few times made a good paycheck spotting loads into NYC/LI for people who "didn't have those pages in their map". Thanks, I'll take that borough pay and half your load pay :) Percentage is the way to go if you're in a good lane AND can deliver 4-5-6 loads a week.

With Melton you can get a brand new truck or an older one (no more than 3 or 4 yrs old. They faze out the older ones sometime in their) APU's and inverters in the trucks. They have e-z pass for the north east and pike pass. I know there is a pass i am forgetting, but any toll on their suggested route is re-embersable.

I've talked to a couple guys that run alot of north east, we spent 3 weeks basically running between MS, Oh, Tn, Ma,Md, Ct, Nc the fourth week out we ran from NC to Mt, down to Ne, ND,SD, Ok and are on our way home towards FL. We haven't gotten any loads to Fl except when we asked for hometime, but depending on if you are in a "frieghtlane" you probably would have better luck. We talked to a guy in Tulsa that said he manages to get by his place in Tn on average 3 times a month sometimes once a week, without asking for hometime but once a month. Luck of where he lives and what he is getting.

The terminals are nice, ppl are friendly and helpful. No one bothers you about the truck unless you compley trash it. Rider and pet program.

In Tulsa Friday the new hires, 3 got "older" trucks, one same as ours 2011, one got a million milers truck I beleive it was a 2011 also, one 2012 and one lucky sap got a 2013.

Pay is by mile, plus tarp pay $40. Your cpm is based on driveing experience.

I left Melton at beginning of December due to a injury on home time and wouldn't be able to do the securement for a few months so I came back to slamming doors for now. When I left they were starting to implement driver trainers so if you had no prior flatbed you would might end up with a trainer if having a hard time grasping ahold on things. Pay is hard on experience, less than 6 months is .34cpm, less than 1 year .36cpm, 1-5 years .40cpm and goes up little more from there. $40 tarp pay, fuel bonuses, rider/pet program, can bank your home time if you don't use all of what you earned whenever you go home, once been there for 4 months get guaranteed home time to use ONCE every 6 months, and guaranteed home for Christmas if you want it. Get paid numerous holidays, take great care of their trucks and don't mind paying to get services done on the road instead of making you bring it to the shop.

Any expenses for tolls/scales, oil, dunnage etc... Is all reimbursed and will reimburse you $8 per shower if you pay for a shower out of pocket. Apu's and inverters, take the truck home, truck wash every 21 days, don't force you to chain in winter, during inclement weather are not allowed on I-70 west of Denver, they will route you long way around if safe to do so and pay you the miles for it. Rarely heard from my DM unless there was a problem with a load. Safety guys are easy to get ahold of if you have questions on how to tarp or secure certain things. I know I am missing lots of stuff but I was really happy there. Slow times here and there, but that is most every company.

Dony know much about TMC, like the trucks though!
