I hauled a big ol' shaft the other day. 25k, 12' long and 3' diameter that needed to be tarped.
I could have used chains or straps.
I used four 3/8" chains, then I tarped. Doing it this way made me tarp the chains which made the tarp angle out and it harder to secure. I'm wondering if I should have tarped, then chained. I have some strips of rubber about 3"x36" that I think would protect the tarp. I have some bungees long enough to wrap around the tarp and shaft.
Opinions?

Seriously tho, You just need a smaller tarp is all. This is where a 12x19 comes in handy.
Why was it hard to secure? The piece was narrow, so with it centered on the wagon, the tarp would pull out to the sides like any other job. A picture would help too lollosttrucker Thanks this. -
Yea, I know, too much talking about wrapping the shaftSHC Thanks this. -
I can't imagine putting chains over my tarps. Seems to be asking for tears even with rubber mats.
I have put straps over my tarps but I don't care to do it that way either.
Probably the best way is to get a contastoga. -
losttrucker and perufb Thank this.

I am going to assume the shaft was up on blocks. I'd wrap it, use straps, loop a couple of the straps around like you would to secure a load of pipe, and use the rest of the straps just going across. I'd still use the rubber pads with the straps.
Using chains over the rubber pads does not disperse the tension across a wide enough area to avoid tarp damage. The straps are wide enough to do this. Using enough of them, it will definatlely secure your load. Looping the other straps will help keep things centered. -
I should have gone with your idea -
What about just getting a throw away tarp from a t/s? Could wrap it up like a Christmas present and not worry about chains damaging your tarp. ...
Or grease or oil from the shaft getting on your tarpSHC Thanks this. -
