Hope you guys can help me here.
    I saw a trailer - 3 axle step GVWR 102,000 , frame rating 60 ton , 3 axles on 17.5 tires.
How much cargo weight can this trailer hold within its rating ,Assuming truck and trailer combo can axle out and permits the weight?
Anyone have experience with 17.5 tires?

ok lets forget about travel and permits for a bit.
How much cargo weigth can this trailer hold without exceeding ratings. I would think the tires are the limitting factor here?

19.5 size are rated for only about 55 MPH loaded. run fast heavy they dont last 40;000 or 60 thou miles each depend on brand.

There will be to weight ratings

Concentrated in like 10 or 12 ft

And distributed across the trailer length

The gvwr is the distributed rating and typically includes the empty weight of the trailer and the load. So in this case likely no more than 80- 85k of payload assuming axle/ tire ratings allow for this.

Not a lite load on 17.5's with this one. I was permitted at 112,000 with 58,800 on the back. The piece itself was 70,000#. Could have run 70 mph but wouldn't have run very far without blowing tires. I never run these trailers over 65 when it's cold and as the day warms up and the loads get heavier I get slower, down to Prime speeds.

Catalinaflyer , thanks that clears up my doubts.
I cant read the scale ticket , its a real light print and I cant edit it. What were your weights? Where did you pick up and del that piece?

Sorry it came out so light,
    13420
    40000
    58760
    112180

That was the first weight, I changed out a couple shims on the flip and moved a 1000# back on the trailer and slid the 5th wheel back to get my steers under 13k#

I picked it up in Everett, WA and took it to Detroit, MI

Just like the tag says...102,000# will be the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of the trailer and cargo, excluding the tractor. If the tires have the sidewall weight rating to allow 5,000# max load rating in dual application, and the jusrasdiction allows it, that would be 60,000# on the trailer Tri-axle group and 42,000# on the 5th wheel plate. Which is more than the tractor will be able to carry, unless it is a four axle tractor. It is standard to rate a trailer for a little more than is actually going to carry, thus allowing you to not exceed the rating of the trailer when maxed out.

The 60ton frame rating will be fully distributed, not concentrated! A frame with a 60ton concentrated rating built out of T100 steel would have upper and lower flanges 3/4 - 15/16" thick approx 5" wide. This would make the tare weight for a tri step ridiculously high for this type of trailer.

    281ric Thanks this.
