Hey, everyone. I was recently advised that running a 53' flatbed may require an oversize/overlength permit. This is the first I have ever heard of this and can't imagine why it would be the case. Has anyone else heard of this rule?

Depends on where you are driving. For instance between Lewiston and Boise, Idaho you have to have a permit and tandems have to be 40' bridge. The company I worked for had to buy my permit at the Lewiston scales before I could go down the canyon. I am sure there are other places, but that is my experience. I was running box though.
-
Oh and the Lewiston scales give you the tape so you can go out and set your bridge.
-
Ok. Any other places in the U.S or Canada that anyone knows of?

53's aren't allowed off the interstate. in idaho. (for the most part). without a permit. and you can meet the off track requirements.
one company I worked for had a color coded map.
I'm not sure. but I think there's a northeastern state that doesn't allow also. -

You need to check the bridge and kingpin laws for the staes you run in, Tn has it doesnt really inforce it but Florida will nail your pecker to the wall for it.
all you need for the staes with it is an anual kingpin permit -
-
Some will nail you on kingpin like the others have said..
Mn. will check you on kingpin axle spacings.. Trust me I know... -
connecticut will too. and it cost 750 bucks..........
