im seeking some opinions. Im own my truck and leases on to a company but I havent made more than 1.00 a mile the first month. I know theres a learning curve but .92 to 1.00 is ridiculous. Im thinking im gonna try landstar or mercer.. Does anyone have any opinions??? Also i would need to lease a trailer at first.. I have always run a 48 Flat but is freight better paying enuf to justify more cost for s Step deck.... ???

Do you need a load planner, or can you comfortably plan yourself off a load board.

LS trailer rent is $170/week for flat. Mercer also has a trailer rent to buy program.

I think i am comfortable enuf to plan my own loads. I actually like the fact landstar leaves it up to the driver, but If i had a planner who i could trust i could go either way. I talked to mercer its 500 a month for a flat and 700 for a step.

at mercer the planner just calls to offer you loads, its up to you on which you choose to pull. I think mercer would be better for a driver of one year.

but either place would be the two to pick from, mercer also pays after each load.

I came to Mercer under similar circumstances in May. I plan myself off our load board, or call an agent to see what is available. My driver manager is there if i need help. Once he saw I k ew what i was doing, he just leaves me alone. He calls if he sees a load I would normally take if i havent yet. I pull a step, there is more freight for flats, but i stay busy.

Mercer and LS pull mostly the same freight at similar rates. We may be higher on one customer and lower on another. Its just about preference. LS you deal directly with agents, Mercer not so much, though you can if you want to.

You don't need either one, get your own authority! It's not that much more work and YOU are in total control of what you do and how much you want to make. There is no company that exists that truly care about you. The only thing that any company can offer you is their hands in your pocket. I guess you can already see that from your recent paychecks. Be smart, be organized and be professional, take control of your business. Don't allow ANY company to control you.

Its definately my ultimate plan to get my own authority. My plan was company drive for 2 years, lease on for 1 year then get my own authority, but I think you may be right, it is looking better every day to get my authority. I understand companies need to make money, but ir should mutually benefit the driver and company. Its kinda sad how this industry chews up people and spits them out so fast.

you should use more common sense, lol

getting ones own authority isn't the answer to prayers or the magic bullet. it is nowhere near as easy as you paint it to be.

young man, you haven't been at this long enough to even get nibbled on very good, much less chewed and spit out. not being mean, just stating facts. be alittle more patient, find a good place to lease and learn. first thing to do is move from florida to at least ga
