Is it legal to store dunnage under the trailer behind the landing gear? It stacks there well but not sure if its legal

Yes....but you can't use bungees to secure them, strap or chain

I have a 1 inch strap on it now. Maybe I should put a 2inch just to be safe

Thanks for the help. That spot seems to be a perfect place for the dunnage.

i buy the walmarts or harborfreights 1 inch. 350 pound wll.

bungees have a 50wll. never been stopped or heard anyone stopped for bungees.

the landing gear holds in place. the straps just keep dunnage from sliding out the side.

pay attention to other flats. you'll see all kindsa crap hanging on the sides of the frames.

NC. scales like it when you have 4in. strap under landing gear cross bar then over wood, any thing less they were looking alot harder for other things to start a insp. was stopped at TN. I-24 coops pulling a co. trailer 4by4 were slid in next to frame with just coat hangers twisted around em, the man said driver must have something holding them from falling off trailer,I guess its just different all over, I use rubber tarp straps just on extend pole for popping strap protectors on/off to keep it from getting crushed.

Yup have had my dunnage on landing gear for years. Previously i used 1 inch strap and went through many level 1's without hitch. Recently changed to 2 inch strap. Just FYI occasionally I will store dunnage in between deck supports (for lack of better term) and the main beam on the side of trailer, if you store lumber there DO NOT use bungees you need a strap on those boards per DOT. Bungees hold the dunnage just fine did it for years but a years back DOT in FL told me to put a strap on the dunnage.

On more thing when you tighten the strap down on your dunnage on the landing gear, make sure it tightens up on all the dunnage. The way I stack mine, there is usually on or two boards that are a little loose. So, I will use two bungees and before I tight the strap I will wrap the bungee around the loose boards as well as some of the other boards. Then I will tighten the strap down.

I was told in Pa during inspection to strap dunnage under trailer. Bungees not good enough. All retaining hardware has to display the WLL. Bungees don't have a WLL label. Well mine don't.
Wisconsin will also give you an unsecure load violation for using bungees.

I use 2" ratchet straps on mine.
