Hi all I am going to school in Feb and should have the cdl in mid March I am starting to get some jobs lined up for mid-March. Since I have never driven an eighteen wheeler, I was wondering if maybe I should start off with a job driving a flatbed. The company is TMC of anyone has any feedback. I am an old farm boy who does not mind getting dirty or wet. Any thoughts?

They came to my school to recruit. You have to be 23 to work for them. If I wanted to go over the road I would go with them. They get you home every weekend guaranteed. You get to run Peterbilt 379's, 389's, and they have a lot of those new aerodynamic Peterbilts. They also pay pretty good CPM and they also offer percentage of the load pay starting at 26%. It ends up being a little more than being paid by CPM, according to them. You can also invest in the company since they pride themselves in being "employee owned". They also give you bonuses in company stock which ends up being a large sum of money in the end. Their training is 6 weeks (?) in Des Moines Iowa. The one catch is that you have to find a place to park your truck over the weekends. Since you're a farm boy I bet you could find a farm to keep your truck at. They definitely hire student drivers as long as your background is clear.

Waggoners Trucking has a good reputation. The website has "experience required" but apply anyway; one new CDL grad in Colorado was hired.

    Jones Bros. Trucking
    System Transport

Put your location on your profile; you may not be in the hiring area for some companies.

It depends. For the last 4 years I have been working 6 days a week. I want this to transition into an enjoyable career. I want to be able to translate my time into good wages. If I can take my wife with me on weekends, who knows? I just know that I do not want to be living to work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. So as I work and find out how the system works, I will be able to have a better idea of that

    My thoughts:

You have 2 kinds of wannabe posts.
    1. asks about pros and cons, flatbed to reefer, is it worth the extra work..etc.
    2. Hey! I want to flatbed. I want to throw some chains and am used to outdoor work. Where do I sign up?

Which one does ol farmboy fit in? My kind of driver. He's ready to skateboard. Doesn't matter where he goes, he will do okay. TMC will do fine to get started. But whats your 3 year goal?

BTW, I will drink my next adult beverage in your honor.

I don't want to start out working for someone, putting in extra time when they need extra help and then it turns into someone expecting you to work 7 days a week. However, if the money is good that is a different story
