You seem to think guys pulling $2+ a mile averages to their truck are starving to death with nothing to do? Volume is not where it could be but guys like us can work 6-8 months out of a year and net the same as guys like you working weeks, months out a time and 50 weeks a year.... we pick up your slack. We're the ones who look good at the beach while you're constantly burning yourself out on the highway.

    Good Question

Look I read through the reply's so I like to jump in and add my 2 cents.

It just so happens Im on a power only load right now. I picked up in Hartford Ct going to Indy for thursday. I got it from my Agent, it pays $ 1750 at 830 miles that 2.10 a mile. Out of that I got an 800 advance for fuel and I know I wont use it all because I have 3/4 tank of fuel from my last load.

    Fuel Mileage
My truck is a 2007 Freightliner Century Class,,, very solid truck and nothing fancy. Gets very good fuel mileage, i am averaging between 6.5 and 7...

    My Load
Its a light load only 33,000 lbs. What it is, it's a machine, its a rock sorter it came out of a mine. Also I dont have to worry about paying insurance for the trailer or trailer payments. I drop it off when I am done.

Those Guys Who Want 3 Bucks a Mile
Hey if you are saying you cant make money if your not making 3 bucks a mile and then your needing and "engine over-haul" LOL go get another truck. Meaning that Pete or W900 is breaking down to much and costing you way to much fuel. Better yet lets look at the driver. What are your driving habits? Are you one of those guys who only hauls the cool loads and only works certain days... LOL Haaaaaahahaha

3 bucks a mile wont get you far if your sucking 5 miles a gallon and your truck payment is 625 a week. Heck at that rate anything less than 3 you will be broke.

    Come Down To This
It comes down to this. As we all know the rates of freight changes a lot depending on the market and the season. So my piece of advice is if your going to do power only keep yourself in the loop of the freight-lanes. Because when you are in the loop you have a better chance of getting a good rate.

Now the only reason why I am doing a power only load is because I had to give back my refer up in Boston. I was going to pick up another refer but that fell through. So I got all set up on an Extra Lease because the company I am leased through has a national account. They approved it with no money down, great. The only problem was I still couldn't find a decent paying load out of Mass with a Dry Van. So I got looking into this power only load and wow im happy.

    Another Piece of Advice
Another piece of advice is you want to stay at least a load to 2 loads ahead of yourself. This is good because you know what will be doing and gives you time to look for a good rate for where you want to go. The more you book your loads the more you will get used to the language and making a deal - deal.

    Good Luck
And my hats off to you guys who wont move for 3 bucks a mile or more.

    My Trips Last Week
Last week was pretty good I grossed out around 4500. All I did was pull 3 loads. I am running a refer. I started Tuesday morning, load was 33000 and left Detroit with 1 stop in NC and final in Atlanta for Thursday pay was $1550. Then I took a load from Atlanta to Akron Oh for Friday that was $1500 and the load weigh was around 38000. Then I picked up In Wilmington PA for RI and that was another 1500 at 2500 lbs. I delivered that Monday morning no problem.

You can get a dry van trailer really cheap around 6500 and up. Personally I go with a refer and have a dry van on the side.
Another thing I have no doubt that there is good paying loads out there. They are out there and no one want to say where they are LOL. My advice is to get to know the customer and get to know your freight so you can plan your loads.

    Best of Luck

I don't understand you drivers who pull in an average rate $2.10 a mile, actually that is a low rate, then turn around and laugh at those of us who command$3+ a mile - as if we are the fools and the joke is on us? What's up with that? Don't you want to make every dollar you possibly can? Why are you so proud to sell yourself short like that?

How many miles do you drive at that $3 / mile and what is your final net earnings at the end of the year?

Bayou was just bragging how he got $3.28 / mile average. Then he finally admitted he only got $2.47 / mile with ALL miles driven and it was only 31,000 miles for the year.

I disagree with your belief and believe the past couple of years actually doing it my way, shows me it's worth it to be patient and someone consistently hauling $1.90 is losing out no matter how many miles turned... Last year I did $2.19 on 76k miles. This year I'm on pace to turn about the same miles at $2.34 a mile to the truck. Deadhead is trending the same this year about 25 percent. The difference between those who command $3+ and those who take the easy cheaper road, is the first has customers covering their deadhead and avgs over $2 mile all miles in - while the latter gives deadhead away for free and is normally a sucker for any 1,000 mile load paying $2,100
