Interested in becoming a freight broker

For the past three weeks or so I have been looking into becoming a freight broker. I have read some horror stories and have really been taking my time learning the pro's and con's of this area in trucking. I drove three years over the road before leaving my job to care for my ill parent. Does anyone have some good advice on where I need to start or what I need to do. I'm willing to work for a legit brokering company, but I don't know where to find one with all the bad apples out here you have to be really cautious. Does anyone have valid and legit information on where I should start to look for help. I know exactly what type of freight I want to get involved with and just need a heads up on where to start.
