Hi I have 01 freightliner DD series 60 recently was in the shop twice last week got the ECM replaced had bad wiring and not enough ground... I had noticed before the truck shut down months before that the oil pressure started jumping around and not reading correctly. Ijust thought it was a sensor or electrical issue and on idle would be below 20 psi and runing near 30 psi..... After the shop read the same but now when I'm hauling near gross on incline after a few min of being on a low gear pressure start to drop and eventually I get oil signal with engine shutdown.... Truck runs fine afterwards .... Changed the oil pressure sensor thinking that was the problem but same thing happen with new sensor and it wasn't cheap. Oil is above full and I have a small coolant leak on head gasket ...... But coolant is @ full .... Not sure where to look? Can't afford any more shop fees I'm a Owner Operator. I'm not losing oil... I thinking it might be air but don't know where to look ....plz Help!........thanks

The first thing to address would be the overfull oil level. Was the engine overfilled with oil? Or is another fluid entering the crankcase causing the oil level to be high? When the oil level is over full the rotating assembly will be slapping in the oil causing aeration of the oil especially at high rpms and on grades. Try draining the oil to proper level and don't run it overfull. Check the oil for fuel or coolant content when draining down to proper level.

That was recently I put 1 gallon the first couple days after the it came out of the shop cuz I had fixed a leaking oil hose weeks before it had gone into the shop thiking it was low on oil .... Freightliner said no fluids in the oil its a bit over the full line Like 1/8 over or less .... But can drain some no problem

I have a 1998 3406 cat with a " water in the oil " problem , yes oil is milky , has good compresion and runns like a champ , starts right up, so I dont think head gasket ,or sleeves . I removed oil cooler and looks good I guess how do I verify oil cooler is good ? I have water in it and its holding overnight. If the weep hole in the water pump is pluged will it kick back water into oil? what should I check next ?

Do you have the correct oil dipstick in the tube? I've seen a similar problem from a dealer that switched the dipstick. The new dipstick showed the oil level to be correct but it was way too high.

Does your oil pressure gauge operate from the electrical sensor, or is it a manual pressure gauge? If it's not the manual gauge, I would buy a cheap manual gauge with tubing and connect it at the electrical sensor with a tee fitting, then run the tubing and gauge into the cab with you. If the pressure is good on the manual gauge, but you get the alarm and shutdown, then have the shop look at the sensor wiring. Could be a bad ECM or the work done at the shop wasn't done correctly. First you need to make sure that you're not actually losing oil pressure by using the manual gauge and loading the engine on the incline.

I haven't worked on cat engines, but most others that I've worked on have an o-ring seal at the base of each sleeve that seals the water jacket from the crankcase. If one of the o-rings fails, it will cause milky oil, but won't affect how the engine starts or runs otherwise.

As for the oil cooler being bad, check your coolant for signs of oil contamination. The oil pressure is higher than the coolant pressure when the engine is running, so you should see oil floating on your coolant if it's bad. I've also seen coolant turn to 'chocolate milk' as a result of a bad oil cooler.

Typically no, they're usually in a captive groove in the sleeve, only accessible when you remove the sleeve. You COULD remove the pan and pressurize the cooling system with a tester, then you should see coolant seeping out between the sleeve and the block if that's actually the issue. Even then, it may only leak at operating temperature, or with the pistons moving within the sleeves.
