I have had nothing but fuel mileage nightmares with my Freightliner 2006 Detroit 60 series columbia since I have had it for 3 months now. For starters, my fuel mileage is all over the place, one minute i am at 4.3 the next minute I am at 5.1 and then sometimes in a blue moon I will hit 6.2 or 7.4.........I have box, keep the same speed 65 & even tryed 55 but same results. I haul 75,000 GROSS most of the time. I am OTR so i go all over 48 states. In the last 3 months since I owned this truck, I have had the Overhead done, Turbo changed, new air filter & housing that holds it (had a crack in it), fuel filters changed at every scheduled oil chagne. I just went into the shop yesterday, mechanics put computer on it & said they got error code 39 EGR--VNT Vanes not responding & also there was a bunch more codes & possibilitys that went wtih this error code, but I do not know what the list of possibilitys were. I had Freightliner run the computer on my truck 1.5 months ago and they said my EGR was running fine but my VNT Vanes for Turbo was not responding & that is when i changed the Turbo out because they said it would fix the fuel issue problem, No such thing happened. Now before I hand over another 2,000.00 to another shop to replace the EGR I would like some advice from all of you. I am wondering if by chance this is NOT a EGR problem, that it is in fact a Sensor issue, question is WHAT SENSOR(s) would I be looking into & is this possiable to actually be the problem? My truck pulls awesome and I have no other issues other than fuel (knock on wood). Thanks for any and all help with this issue.

Have the charge air cooler checked if you haven't already it might be leaking and need replaced.

yea i would agree with both of those ideas. Do a pressure test on the cac and if its leaking more than 5% replace it with a duralite cac. They're suprisingly easy to change given u have all the tools. Also I would add check the air-2-air if a tiny slice in the boot can have effect on mpg. Vpod could defenitaely be a culprit along with injectors. detroit diesel can run a cut-out test and see if theyre operating properly.(hope like hell they are cause theyre expensive) Whatever you do dont go to one of these places saying they can hook into ur ecm and reflash it and magically ur gonna get better fuel mileage

Forget Freightliner with an issue like this.
Try to get to Interstate Diesel in Altoona, Ia. They are an actual Detroit shop, and will get to the bottom of it in half the time of a good Freightliner shop will.
Run the cac leak down test with all hoses connected, I have seen some places run it just on the cac itself, which does not test the hoses and elbows.

The EGR is not going to affect fuel mileage but by giving you more power if the EGR is not working. Expensive part over $1000.00. Have you tried a simple valve head adjustment?. This will cause you to burn or use more fuel than needed.

I may be wrong because by no means am I a mechanic, but having an 07 Columbia I was getting bad fuel mileage. Took it to the shop got it diagnosed and by getting the EGR valve changed it fixed that issue. But, that's the beauty of the EGR engines it can be a whole crapload of different things. That's why next truck I buy (hopefully a glider) will be pre-EGR.:biggrin_25523:

Does higher altitude not derate the motor too though? Certainly does on mine (reduced boost) at high altitudes.....

Sounds like you might want to rethink your choice of shops,a '06 should not have any warrenty left so there is absolutly no reason to have your truck @ a dealership. If you bought an extended warrenty somewhere in the warrenty paperwork there should be a list (or a phone # or website where you can get 1) of shops that pretend to honor the warrenty. My local Detroit shop is fair at best "if" you get the right guy working on your truck. In this (Cincinnati,Oh.) area there are a couple of independant shops that do supreme work @ a fair price, that being said there are also a bunch of outright thieves out here too. I found out a long time ago that "just because it says Cat (or Cummins or Detroit or KW or Peterbilt ect...) on their shirt and building does NOT make them a expert @ anything but emptying your wallet and trying to make you feel good about it(kinda sounds like a lot lizard don't it?)Ask other O/O in your area,or ask on here for recomendations in your area or in your traffic lanes, and check them out before they lay hands on your equipment. There is only one sensor for the EGR on the Detroit 60 series, Its the Delta psi sensor it sits at the top by the valve cover on the left side facing the truck, It has two tubes coming off the base of it and this sensor can go bad,had to replace one tonight. the only way to check this sensor is on a pc with, Detroit software, the counts should be between 83 and 186 ,if not within this range change it, EGR systems all suck , A failing EGR will cause all kind of problems and NO you can not just get rid of it. A Detroit 60 series EGR will run around 1200.00 bucks that's what we pay from fleetpride then you have shop time , I'm not sure what the book time is on a EGR but I can do it in under two hours if all goes well. The Delta psi sensor you can do yourself take's about ten min to do, If you have a failing EGR you will see a lot of black smoke from your stack and and just run like crap. Also check the tubes from the Delta psi sensor base to make sure they are not clogged up, Also The EGR cooler can clog up and cause some problems,I turn a wrench six night's a week I hope this helps you out some
