    Non Wastegated BW instead of wastegated stock turbo

    Hello Guys. My name is Sergiu, and i'm first time on this forum.
    I really need some help about a turbo job. Recently i observed some oil dropping out of the wastegate of the turbo and i decided to do it at home (on the road the price is twice bigger). I am not a mechanic but i really like doing staff on my truck so i said i'm gonna do it myself. Now i was thinking to get a better turbo for my engine, a detroit 12.7 no egr with 435/500 hp. I get usually 7mpg, but i want more, so i decided to go with a BW 171702(i don't need more power but just more mpg). When it came i observed it has no wastegate(the stock garret has wastegate). Now my biggest problem is that i'm afraid do don't damage the engine since this turbo has no wastegate, and like many guys told me i'm afraid it can create much more pressure than my engine can hold. The truck is 2002 freightliner with about 980K miles. The engine uses about 1.5 gallons of oil between oil changes(15K miles), still has very good oil pressure at about 48-50psi with 1500 rpms. Please, I need a really dam good advice from u guys, to worry or not.

    I doubt the new turbo with higher boost pressure at any given rpm will hurt anything.
    I'm NOT an expert anymore...used to be but not now! Call Pittsburg Power and ask them what they think. They are experts on hot-rod engines.

    Twolane, I talked recently to one guy from Peterbilt dealer and to one from Freightliner here in my area, both of them told me that a turbo without a wastegate will build pressure continuously, which will cause a engine failure. Anybody with more knowledge in this field? Any help appreciated. Tomorrow i need to do the job, so i really need some help on this topic for a wise decision.

    i run that turbo on my 2000 500 detroit ,pyro runs cooler little laggy on bottom end does not build any more boost more fuel builds more boost.put it on you will like it mine was put on at 750,000 now at 950000,no problems fuel mil up a bit but not much

    I saw two new gliders from crossville Tn. with that turbo. It should work good.

    I have a non waste gate turbo. garret. has 1.4 million miles on it. still going, 11.1 detroit

    Waste Gates are for your higher rpm's to keep the turbo from overwinding. Who ever is telling you you will get to much pressure does not understand the mechanics of the engine or turbo. To get to much boost would have to be over 60+ p.s.i. which is unheard of.
    If you have a prometer guage, put it on and just watch the exhaust temp. under hard pulls. Might keep your rpms under 1800 under constant pull. Really shouldn't be running 1800+ rpms with that engine.
    Wastegates are to keep the turbo from over winding. As they run very hight rpms normally. Under a hard pull your normal turbo is running 35K to 50K rpms. Overwinding is like 70K+
    Now let the chewing my but begin.

    Hi Sergiu,

    I'm detroit tech my advise stay with the wastegate turbo it perfoprms much better at low rpm and light loads but it will limited the boost under heavy load.

    Hi guys, thank u for the replies, i started to put it on, but now the s-type exhaust is too short and i have to change it. I will watch the mpg and the temp. I'll let u know what is going on next.
    BUT, how to install that temp sensor on the exhaust? where? my exhaust manifold has absolutely no holes at all. any ideeas about this?

    higher rpm will keep it cooler its a great turbo an a lot cheaper than stock ive been running mine some time now and would not go back to stock
