I recently opened a repair business and scrapping along with it and basically got a 1982 Cabover EX Consolidated Freightways single screw for free. Was wondering if they are worth anything or would it be viable to use for scrapping trailers within about a 50 miles radius of my home. Its got a Cummins VT903 V8 with a 6 speed Spicer and needs some work, has air start and center point steering

to rebuild old cabover is a good idea becouse I like to see old trucks on road in good shape.

About old engine... really poor MPG so look for N14 on JYs with 10 st tranny.

If you NEED a truck and you could have it on the road for less than 5 grand it could work for your needs. Any more than that I'd look elsewhere.

VT 903s usually get pretty good fuel mileage. I owned one, and for it's day I got better fuel mileage than any other truck I had owned, or did own until I bought a series 60 Detroit.

Just needs brake shoes and a good cleaning for the most part, im looking at replacing the rear pintle hook crossmember with a steel one (all steel frame with aluminum crossmember) and plumbing it for equipment trailer and light recepticle, also looking for a better transmission like a 10 speed or maybe even a 2 speed rearend. CF liked the 6 speed spicers with the really low rearend gear ratios for hauling doubles and triples and it tops out under 55-60. Also looking at possibly converting to power steering and electric start if I can keep the costs down with used parts. Does anyone know if adding power steering to a center point system is dangerous in anyway? I know the way it sits now, it suppost to be different the manual steering geometry wise and don't know if adding power will screw it up somehow?

Steering wise, just put a complete JY axle under it, c/w steering components and box.
Electric starter should be an easier deal to fix.

One question is will a regular PS pump will fit on the 903, or does it take an engine specific pump. I don't know that answer. Center poing steering looks funny, but doesn't take as much effort to turn as regular steering. They're really not that rough to drive even in tight places. Just different, and more revolutions of the steering wheel to turn the wheels from lock to lock.

I'd fix and drive the truck just to hear the sound of that 903. I love the way those VTs sound.

As far as speed, what ratio rear is in it now? The old regular 903s usually had a 4.63, while after the VT came out some were 4.44. A 2800-3000 rpm 903 with 4.44 or 4.33 rears and a 13 speed were some mighty fast trucks. If yours is geared anywhere around 4.44 or even 4.63, a .73 od may be enough speed. I haven't run the numbers yet to see where you're at. Knowing CF, you probably have a 903 set at 2400.

Theres a tandem axle ex CF truck at one of the local wrecking yards here in Spanaway that apparently has a VT903 with power steering and electric start thats been sitting there for years so im going to press my luck and see what they want for the parts to convert everything, I cant seem to find the axle tag on the rear to verify the gear ratio so ill have to scrounge around for it.
