Vague information about mountain driving? Wow.
I am currently in NV, and believe it or not, ran over some mountains on the way here. Hell the first load the truck did was right across 80 into Ca.
Last one to the top? Not in this truck, but I wouldn't mind if I was. I tend to go past the Cat crowd when they need to stop for fuel.
Zero MPG climbing a mountain? Really, news to me.....Every truck I have had gets junk climbing a mountain, get used to it.
HG issues have been addressed years ago with new style HG's adn heads. Problem solved.
Again I ask, your direct ownership experience with a Mercedes motor? Or is this all talk and no ownership experience?

Mornin leftlane, I was wonderin if I can get some more info from you on blocking the egr/egr cooler. My radiator ruptured and I had it replaced with an all steel one. Now shop says it was a bad egr cooler that caused it and a bad egr valve wont be far behind. I've read multiple postings from granhauler and yourself but would like some more details. Truck is a 2006 Columbia with mbe 4000, 13 spd, 660,000 miles. Feel free to email me at bwhiteker@gmail.com as well. Thank You.

I just bought a 06 Columbia with the Benz engine 13 speed.. good price 800k miles. For me its a starter truck but its good to hear that as long as I take care of it its good to go.

If I can get 10k more miles before any major work ill be happy!

I got one from Illinois Dyno Center, and it worked good when loaded. I haul oversize/overweight most of the time.

Otherwise, just run it.

I am a license dealer for 4 yrs, General Mechanic (semi tractor specialization) for 25yrs, and license diesel fuel mechanic for 10yrs. Before being a mechanic I drove for 8yrs. I prefer to fix than to drive.
M.Benz are great motors if you take care of them. The biggest problem (in the U.S.A.) is the cost of parts. M.Benz tend to cost a good 10-20% more in parts when compared to a motor brand like Detroit. Also, many mechanics don't like to work with them. I don't know why, I have been for overhauling M.Benz motors for years.
Due to EPA raising the MPG requirement to 7.9 a mile, even Caterpillar has decided no longer make motors on class 8 vehicles. The OM 460 (more commonly known as MBE 4000 in the U.S.A.) are built by Detroit. If you are personally asking me, that only makes it better. Your only other options will be Cummins & Maxx Power. Cummins is fine, I like them, but I would highly recommend buying anything else than Maxx Power. Best of luck to you - ED
