On the series 60 - you,ll find that you have a solenoid seal gone (Lower) and it,s dumping oil hence weak jake at low rpm,s 4000 have crap jakes at anytime but normally as SMD said it,s just a faulty solenoid but they do work in conjunction with the fan so check if the fan pulls in when you activate the jakes

    On both trucks:
Cruise works, I've tried the jakes with and without cruise being turned on. I've tried pulling on all the pedals (brake, clutch, and accelerator) to make sure a switch isn't getting stuck under one of them. I've tried high, med, and low rpms. Nothing seems to make a difference. Next time I'm in a shop I'll see if I can convince them to plug a computer into it.

Thanks for all the input! (And Brickman, check your voicemail!)

The actuator on the MBE is air, not electric, and operates a butterfly valve in the exhaust, unless you have one with the turbo brake.

The shaft has bushings that go out and leak exhaust, and eventually the actuator seizes up and usually won't release, then you will find out it was doing more to brake than you thought. These are hard part issues and probably wouldn't even throw a code.

Many of them got locked out so they couldn't work because of this, I got my load and brought it home by being aware of the problem and working around it, another driver took a piece of wire from the broom she carried and wired the one on her truck open.

The mechanic used a hose clamp to tie mine open until we got it repaired after I took it OTR, it helped lots on I-80 in PA.

Can't help you with the Series 60, other things have been discussed here, could be any one or more of them.

There is an independent shop just east of the FL shop, on the N side of street.
Hughes I think the name is. Thats who works on all of the trucks we haul oil with.
Ask for Dale and tell him one of Jim's drivers sent you.

    any fault codes?

Are you sure all switches are OK. People think that switches and pedal wires run to engine ECM - NOT. With MBE engine is comtrolled by propriate CAN by ADM (also called FR, FMR ore VCU). This is small box in right cab whall in old trucks and under dash in clutch pedal area on newer.

    MBE is totally different engine

Okay, just a quick update. I finally got authorized to take the truck with the Detroit 60 series into the shop. Turns out there was nothing wrong with the jakes at all. The parameters in the computer were set so the jakes would not activate under 30 mph (why, I have NO idea). So, they changed the parameters, and now the jakes work in every gear, all the way down to about 2 mph. :D Makes my life a little better!

Thank you all for your suggestions and ideas!

on the 2003 that i drive, the wiring harness was bad which resulted in an intermittent jake.had it replaced and an overhead run and now have a fairly strong engine brake on the series 60 IV.

ok a late post but it may help others.

I have a 475 Cummins ISX, the engine brakes are really weak to where they won't hold the truck back empty on a hill. Just had a reman long block put in 2 weeks ago, and the engine brake solenoids were replaced last summer. The shop has checked the solenoids and the wiring going to them, but still can't figure it out. Any ideas out there?
