Why is the oil dipstick completely clean after truck sits for a while...say a day or more but after taking it out sticking it back in then pulling it out again, shows reservoir full.
Just curious.
Dumb question, but here goes.

The oil is splashing around in the lower end while it's running, and gets onto the stick. After the truck sits for awhile, the oil flows back into the bottom of the oil pan. You're running the truck very low on oil.

There is a high and low mark on the dipstick. If you see nothing you will soon will have no motor. It will be there, but won't work.

You both misunderstood my question. I am not running the truck low on oil and I know how to check and add oil. Again, after the truck has been not been run for a while and when go to check the oil level, when initially pulling the dipstick, it is clean of any oil. It only shows the level after sticking it back in and pulling it out a second time.

It could be that the crankcase is pressurized enough to prevent the oil from flowing up the dipstick tube...

Are you parked level?

When I first bought my 05 Columbia with a Detroit, I ran into the same problem. I knew it was full of oil and I have inquired but no one knows what is causing it.

Could crankcase pressure or engine vibration push it out and then after sitting overnight all the oil drips off so when you first pull the dipstick it's clean but when you push it back in it bottoms out and you get an accurate reading.
