What a wonderful question at a time when companies and O/Os are trashing their exhaust systems and installing big 6 and 8 inch pipes and no muffler at all. Altering your exhaust from original carries a $10,000 fine. That doesn't mean you can't go with an aftermarket that matches what you had. Altering your exhaust to reduce back pressure, increase power and subsequently noise is. I live along US Hwy 231 in Indiana and you can hear these illegal trucks and unmuffled engine brakes a mile into the woods.

The regs are there, abusive highway noise pollution is there; it's a matter of putting the two together. Locally we will probably start filing FMCSA complaints... start documenting the bad actors. The decibels (I have a handheld meter) off these trucks runs way above 100. We have just enough yahoos in this industry who think the louder the better. See what they think after paying a $10,000 fine and scrapping all that chrome!

try preaching about a motorcycle too while you are at it. Along with some horrendous pickups. Trucks don't have the corner on the market for loud exhaust.

Soon all trucks will just be exactly the same. Shame on the people who try to customize and do things they like.

We need to comply with the law and the FMCSA regs forbid altering your exhaust and highway noise pollution is just one good reason. Yup, there are loud pickups and motorcycles, too. They usually don't come under the auspices of the FMCSA, though. Class 8 trucks do. That's the difference.

So do motorcycles and cars. Preach about one, preach about them all. I have had the same pissing match already with my local sheriff's department. And I have a stock exhaust when they came at me over my engine brake.

They all have state AND federal laws governing noise and altering components. Enforce them all or get off the holier than though pedestal.

Please show the law which forbids altering in anyway?

i like the sound of a loud jake brake going by me on the highway. but my muffler came apart on my truck it was LOUD after a couple weeks i couldn't stand it anymore, drove me insane. the noise would wear on you threw the day. finally i picked up a muffler at a napa for under 60 bucks put it on in a truck stop parking lot, first time i hit the key it was like a huge sigh of relief. best money iv spent on the truck to date.

cant stand driving a loud truck.
