color of smoke was white. its a 99, freightliner said it was one maybe 2 injectors but they were on back order and only way we could get 2 is to get a six pack of remanned from detroit

I would pressure test the coolant system. Could have cut/broke an O-ring when installing the new injectors. if cooling system holds pressure i would check the vanes on the turbo see if you have any play there. would also look at the charge air cooler for leaks

there is no coolant leaks they said they checked the turbo its fine. replaced injector harness, fuel pump, air cleaners. its not blowing oil or using it or coolant, it has an exhaust manifold leak could that be causing the problem. also replaced check valve and fuel lines. asked them to do a compression test and nobody seems to want to do it. anyone know what one of them would cost and best place to go

I wouldn't bother with a compression test at this point unless it's down on power and/or using oil and has excessive blow by. First think I'd do is pull the fuel return line on the back of the head and put it in a bucket of fuel. Start it up and look for bubbles. If you find bubbles, run a hose from a bucket to the fuel pump so you can run it off a bucket of fuel. If the bubbles stop, then you have a problem from the pump to the tanks sucking air. If they do not stop, then you most likely have an injector not sealed letting compression get into the fuel system.

If it is not using any coolant or oil, the smoke has to be from fuel. You can have a cutout test done, just make sure they run it at different rpms and compare. If injector o-rings are allowing compression in the fuel system, a cutout test will show the wrong cylinder as having a problem. If #5 injector is allowing compression by, #5 will show OK. It is another cylinder further down the firing order than gets that aerated fuel that shows the problem. By running the test at idle and 1000 rpm, the bad cylinder will move to another hole or show more holes bad. This is a sign of a injector not sealing. If the bad cylinder is consistent at any rpm, then there is usually a problem with that cylinder.

everyone keeps telling us #5 injector had it replaced and the same happened.when we were at freightliner they told us it kept jumping from cylinder to cylinder but they did nothing but take us for $6000.00 and it still does the same there is only two fuel lines we havent changed and it is the one that goes from the top of the transmission and one that goes from the primary filter and the pump. the last place replaced wiring harness and #5 injector and said there was no change but he also mentioned #1, we are suppose to have warranties on these injectors but we are wondering if they ever replaced them they wouldn't show me the old ones and told me they register the new ones with detroit and all I have to do is carry that receipt with me for the warranty, I'm lost and don't know who to trust at this point we just spent another 800 dollars and still the same. Since the last guy worked on it it is losing power and putts alot. wasn't doing it before that. now it puffs black smoke too.all these people keep saying is you you an overhaul. they also waited till they r/r injectors at freightliner and told us it needed a head gasket. they replaced that and then it was a overhaul. we made them put it back together and the last thing they said was we are hoping it will go away as far as the smoking went. The engine only has about 250,000 on the overhaul. we also have changed the check valve when we did the other fuel lines. We have an espar installed where they drilled a hole in the top of the tank to install, could that be the problem where it could be getting air in the fuel? the exhaust manifold is leaking and puffing smoke too. they checked the turbo and fuel they say its holding pressure. this is so frustrating. it seems to be running worse since the last guy r/r #5 injector then removed new one and put our old one back in cause I refused to pay for a injector that is suppose to be under warranty. Could he of done something to it to make it miss more than before. Also we had bought some bio diesel in minnesota and it seemed to get worse. any help would be greatly appreciated. they have exhauted our funds and we need to know if its ok to run this way till we earn enough to get it looked at again. we were told to say a pray every morning before we start it cause it will blow up soon. we have been driving it for a month now trying to get it fixed right.

The white smoke is it really strong smelling like diesel, I noticed you had a head gasket put on it could be a little out of time causing this smoke usually it will be very sluggish slow to power up and miss as its powering up then clear up mostly if it ever reaches high idle. It will also smoke and miss worse when first started and seem to get better as it warms up. I also seen an air intake temp sensor cause a white smoke and miss, did not set a code had to go to the data list with pro link scanner and actually view the sensor readings, the sensor was working only it showed 18F as air temp when actual air temp outside was 80 ECM was retarding the time cause it thought it was so cold outside. Just a couple things to check

Jumping from cylinder to cylinder is common with aerated fuel. Just Like I said, if another injector is not sealing, compression can aerate the fuel and mess up another cylinder down the line. It will usually change cylinders at different rpm, which is why it's important to run cutout tests at idle and 1000 rpm. It's also very important to check for bubbles in the return line before you conclude that an injector is bad. Just because a cylinder fails a cutout test, does not mean that you have a bad injector. It doesn't even mean that the problem is with that cylinder if you have air in the fuel.

It's pretty sad that many dealerships charge $100+/hr and do below average work. For what they charge, you should get top notch service from well training techs.
