I have a '02 Freightliner Century that I bought last June. The owner had not seen his truck in 2 years and could not keep a driver in it. I now know why! The last driver in it thought he was a mechanic, and just cut wires and hoses and ran hot wires...UGH!!! What a mess i have dealt with, but i cannot seem to get the cruise control to work for the moving part of going down the road. The cruise can be turned on while sitting still and can bump the idle. I have replaced both dash switches and the micro switch on the clutch pedal, but that hasn't fixed the problem. Any suggestions as to what it might be, or places to start looking/eliminating? The air diaphragm has a capped off line that, according to the schematic, is supposed to go to the cruise control, but all the mechanics that I have talked to about it, say that there is no air involved in the cruise control at all. HELP PLEASE!!!

ele switch in air line turns off idle when u push air butt. in, replace.

The cruise control is effected by the idle circuit, the speed sensor circuit and the cruise control circuit. If you can bump the idle up without setting the parking brake then he bypassed that air switch. It will need the airline hooked back up to it and traced down. God only knows what else he bypassed. Also when you step on the brake pedal there is a switch somewhere that shuts the cruise off too. Also is effected by the speed sensor circuit from the tailend of the tranny going up to the ECM then to the dash.

Yup. Just what Ranger Bob said...

well i got a new normally closed switch to replace the old one and spent a hour on my head upside down to figure that some of the wires were hooked up to the wrong switches. now when you bump the cruise up and step on the brake it shuts the cruise off (normal). yea 1 small victory, but still have no cruise on the open road, the service mgr at freightliner ft worth told me that the capped off air line is supposed to go to the top plate of the transmission to tell the ecm what gear your in,just wondering if any body is familiar with this air line to the top plate??

the ecm had a surge to it and it affected the cruise and jakes. sent it to a programmer in arlington tx and for 495 dollars he fixed it and now we are cruising.
