If you come to the Waco area and go to the Waco Freightliner dealership, I hope you have a better experience than I did. There is a tall young half bald blond headed kid working at the service counter, his name is Kay the owners son. He is a very arrogant #$%&%**. I asked for a estimate on a inframe on my 2003 Columbia for my banker to look at and he told me I was better off getting rid of the truck. He was sitting there behind the counter with his feet propped up on the counter. He is the first person you see when you walk in the front door. He smelled of alcohol and printed out someone else's $19,000 repair bill on a 2005 Columbia then tore the top off of all 3 pages and said give that to your banker. I told him that a 2005 is a different animal 14L egr vs 12.7 non egr and that I would not take a estimate with the top of the pages tore off to my banker. Then he called the salesman to the counter and told him I needed another truck. I told both of them that I was going to fix my older truck and that I did not want a egr truck. The salesman told me that my truck was only worth about $5000 after I repaired it. It was hard to keep my cool and not loose it and knock the hell out of him. I have been buying my parts there and all the parts guys treat me well with a lot of respect. I haven't found one person that works there that hasn't told me he is a jerk but is the owners son and there is nothing that can be done. I was so pissed that I came home and took my truck apart myself. It isin't no big deal to fix it myself because I am a master auto tech but it doesn't fit in my shop and I am doing it outside. I sold my Corvette to get the money to repair the truck and didn't have to go to the bank after all. My truck is a #### good truck and is not wore out and will bring a lot more than $5000. If I played into their game they would have repaired it and have it on their lot for about $25,000. It's the truck in my avitar, has 920,000 miles but looks like new and has been maintained very well. The reason for me wanting to inframe it is because it was popping back through the intake manifold. I took the head off and the cylinders still have cross hatches and no lip aaround the top at all. It appears to have been rebuilt and nothing done to the head because it had a Felpro head gasket that was the problem. I took the head to a good machine shop and am getting a valve job done and all the injector cups replaced and told the machine shop do not mill the head any. Going back with genuine Detroit gaskets. Just wanted to warn my fellow truckers about this.

I hate that they are that way, but its a money deal. I think your better off repairing the truck your self no one depends on the truck like you, you may not be a detroit man but still can do a better job cause you are invested. I would like to give a little advise. I have never had any luck getting machine shops to do diesel heads, even if they are diesel specialist. Have bought heads from truck pro about the same deal. A reman from detroit was only 200 higher than truck pro on the last 12.7 that was done in our shop. Difference in quality was noticeable the minute we un crated it. I know a machine shop some where does them for detroit but apparently they have better training or something. I can't remember the price but that wouldn't help you much as you have the 14.0 liter

I have the non egr 12.7 liter. The shop I took it to does all the machine work on my friends Detroits and he has 30 of them and never had a problem out of their work. It's Crankshaft & Valve in Waco Texas. I checked on a reman head from Stuart Stevens and they told me that my engine had what they called a chrome head? and it was $2400 exchange. It wasn't that big of a job to get it off, my friend loaned me all the special tools, cam gear holder, head lifting plate, special socket for cam journal cap bolts.I had a 16mm snap on 1/2 drive impact socket for the head bolts myself. When I got the head off he came out to my shop to look at the cylinders for me and said he wouldn't do a inframe just the head and injector cups and put it back on and run it. He even loaded my head and took it to the machine shop for me to get it done right. Fellow truckers are the best friends a trucker can have.

If they do that many you will be fine. I was thinking that united engines in Little Rock got just over a grand for reman. I have had several customers take their head to places that do good work on auto stuff and bring it to us in a few miles. I don't for see you having that trouble, guess I should have said recommended machine shop lol. We used to do a lot of equip and truck repair but have slowed down I wanted to pursue this trucking habit a little harder. Just kept a few select customers and hired a good tech to stand in my place. Sounds like you got good advice and yes best advice comes from someone in the business that is successful.

My friend who has been in the trucking business all his life and is now 70 years young is the best adviser I could ever ask for. He tried retiring once, bought himself a Prevost motorhome and just didn't like being away from the trucking industry. He sold the motorhome and got back in it. He is a true blue Detroit man. I have driven his trucks that have over a million and a half miles on them and they run like new and will always pass a DOT inspection. I think if we ever run out of Detroits that he will stop then. He has had them all Cats, Cummins, Isx's but keeps preaching that the Detroits are bullet proof money makers and anything else is a money pit and stay away from egr valves.lol

I agree with most he says and he is right about detroit they are good. I am a CAT man however and don't have drivers that makes a difference. Working on them and driving them your self. If I had drivers it would be Detroits. I looked at an invoice from earlier this year on a 2001 KW T800 DDECIV complete in frame. Head pistons liners new injectors cam bearings wiring harness under valve cover and bullgear. Labor was 3750.00 parts was 6885.00 total tax and all was 11485.00, 10635.00 without tax gave a 6 month unlimited warranty other than king pins and such haven't seen the truck since. I feel just like your buddy no egr motors for us. I'm not saying CAT is any better than detroit just that I grew up with CAT and have worked for CAT and am more comfortable with them. Course we have a 3406 B and a 1MM C16 so no new technology either. Best of luck

If the Waco Freightliner would have done all that you got done for $11,485 they would have got the job. Obviuosly they didn't want to work on my truck so their loss is my gain. I'm just plum wore out on turning wrenches and love being behind the wheel. I got other estimates and they were all around $18,000 with the bull gear. Bull gear looks fine so I'm going to run it & save my money and if it blows while out on the road I will have it towed somewhere and get a reman Detroit installed with a good warranty.

Don't listen to the salesman or whatever he is.. I got rid of a 98 fld had a 12.7 in it 3.55 rears and a 10 spd.. truck would pull the moon back to the earth.. and get fuel mileage doing it.. Over the life of that truck I averaged 6.9mpg... and the last 3 my papers showed 7.4... I made money with that truck.. Well it had over 1.5 million on it and I let them talk me into buying a new (to me truck) an 07.. Good looking truck.. Pulls great (if you are bobtailing) gets 5.3 mpg loaded and empty with a tail wind.. If you are pulling a head wind it gets 4.6 mpg... Have done some stuff to the motor since I have had it and got it up to 5.9 mpg.by tricking the ecm into putting the turbo into boost mode.. but now the actuator on the turbo is leaking air around the plunger.. Long story short I have a nicer ride now.. but I miss my 98 that got 1mpg better and would out pull this 515 14 liter..

I am looking at putting a new turbo on this truck and I am going to talk to majestic turbo in Dallas and Detroit and see about putting 1 size bigger turbo on it.. I have a Detroit guy that swears that will help the power and get better mpg.... But I don't know....I had an old truck that wasn't worth a hill of beans to you or anyone else but it made me money and I let someone talk me into a "more reliable" truck... not really.. Stick with your gut.. Even if it means spending 15k on an overhaul..

and on this prick at freightliner call big freightliner... I mean the home office of both Daddy Freightliner and Lone Star Truck group.. I would also call stewart and stevens and tell them what they are doing.. It will get them straight.. and if it doesn't they don't need anymore of mine or your business.. keep us informed...I have a few trucks and buy a lot of parts from lone star truck group.. I can go to Dallas as easy as Tyler or Waco...(Atc Freightliner is a little proud of their parts though)
