I am currently looking at a 2009 cascadia with a 14L Detroit and meritor 2.79 ratio 10 SPd now I was wondering with this setup and carrying around 40k or 43k lbs would I have a problem making it up hills? Mostly grapevine
Or would I be better off with a dd15 with a 3.58 ratio? It's my first time buying a truck for myself and just would like to know what I'm getting into
2009 cascadia ratios?

The dd15 with the 3.58 is a 13 SPd

dd15 is a better choice but 2.79 truck is most likely a direct drive which basically works out to 3.70 with a overdrive transmission which should pull good IF the 14 liter is healthy most have emission issues imo
californiatrucker Thanks this. -
another thing to consider is dd15 has a very strong engine brake compared to 14 liter

Yeah I think the dd15 is the better choice the 14L is a nice truck but like you said the 14L have emission issues..
is there any easy way to explain what a direct drive is? Thanks for the help -
a direct drive is 1:1 in top gear where as your 13 speed will be .74 in top gear at 60mph 2.79 direct would be roughly 1425rpm 3.58 in 13th overdrive would be 1355rpm or so with 22.5 lo pros . i drive a 2009 cascadia with a 530 dd15 13 sp with 3.42ratio. i typically weigh 95'000 lbs plus. i pass a lot of tandems grossing 80'000 in the hills it will pull hard down to 1000 1050 rpm .personally id love 3.55 or 3.58 ratio behind this motor
