I have a 2007 freightliner century with 60 series detroit with egr only. Under a load upshifting, when the rpms go down to about 11-12 hundred the engine wants to cough until i get the rpms back up. Anybody knows what causes this?

I had that issue with a classic. . Could hear the engine cough back through air breathers. .
Everybody kept telling me they couldn't simulate it. .I guess that I finally found a freightliner dealer that needed work. .. There was a bulletin out about rebuilding the head. . That fixed it. -
I had this same problem and it was my egr valve. Just look there to see if you see any soot or by the input/outputs of the egr cooler. I have the exact same engine as you do (2007 Freightliner Century).

Almost everytime i have had this problem on detroit with egr it has ended up being the turbo i would check youre egr to but there is severe loss of power if the egr is stuck open also check if u see a severe amount of black smoke coming out the stack when u really get on it this is actually a common problem for detroit

Turbo Actuator valve, not opening quick enough to spool up the turbo so you get a "cough". Really isn't a fix, they just keep throwin' new ones on and hope it works. doesn't hurt anything but just annoying.
NorCenArk Thanks this. -
EGR valve stucks, to fix it I had to take it apart and clear soot with solvents

Mine does it too.
New EGR valve due to a EGR Valve code. No difference.
Thinking it's a turbo issue on mine, now to get the dealer to fix it under warranty!

Could be a leak in air charger system. Bad delta p sensor dirty tubes from delta p to egr cooler. Vent vaccines sticking in turbo
