I have a 2007 freightliner m2-106 i bought the tractor from the warm part of the states and brought it in winnipeg for 3 months now this is the first winter so here is my problem the check engine light comes on, if you keep going then the engine protect light comes on, and then both lights start to flash and a few second later the engine shuts down. If you turn the key off and restart the engine no warning lights are on until it is run for a while longer then the process repeats. no black smoke is coming out of the turbo or exhaust i have also disconnected the battery for ten mins and re started the engine and still repeats . any suggestions on what the problem could be or anyone have any experience with this type of problem with their tractors i did think it was an auto theft shut down but nothing has changed . P.S. it has a Mercedes engine.

What is the oil pressure, oil temp, water temp and collant level during shutdown. Could you be low on coolant? Check that your coolant is rated for cold enough with a coolant tester.
The shut down protect is triggered by low oil pressure, low coolant flow (its frozen), High collant or oil temp (if part of it is frozen and its not flowing, some could overheat.)
Unless its malfunctioning, the shut down protection is designed to keep you from destroying your engine. You should not drive it until its fixed. Every time you get the shut down warning, it adds a note to the ecm printout. Trying to resell the truck with to many marks may be difficult if the buyer pulls the ecu. -
Thanks for your reply i park the tractor outside and have it plugged in over night it was first thing this morning to start my day all temps are low as its the very first starting in the morning so everything is cold not frozen i have disconnected the battery waited ten mins tried again nothing theres no frost on the air sensors

i also just added fresh oil two days ago as well had my fuel tanks cleaned from primer and all the other stuff added

As Richter said I would be looking at the coolant as the truck was run in the south and now its in the fridge of the north. I would drain and refill with the correct mixture for your temps. Don't just assume that it must be OK because the color is right.

true i just had the coolant container replaced as it cracked on me a month ago and freightliner added the good winterize diesel coolant dark orange color but i thank you guys for replying
Dryver Thanks this. -
What about the low coolant sensor or low oil pressure sensor, Could they be bad and sending a false signal?

Does your engine have a diesel particulate filter? If it does it sounds like the filter needs a parked regeneration.

what code/s are showing when shut down is happening??

It might be worth the money to have the dealer plug it in to their computer and see what it says. Some have a mobile unit that you can drive up the street with until the problem happens.
baha Thanks this.
