The small company I work for, is a one truck company. They lease a truck from Ryder. I am currently in a 2007 Frieghtliner Columbia. The lease is up in February of 2014 & they have decided to turn this one in & lease a new 2104 Columbia.
My question is, besides DEF, what differences can I expect of this change?
A couple of months ago, we had this 07 in the shop & I was driving a 2012 Casada. It was obviously a nicer truck, but one problem was, the starter locked up on it. Ryder loaned us yet another truck & said that a lot of the newer Frieghtliners were having starter problems & they have changed out a bunch of them. Anyone verify this?
And what about all that front end trouble? The shaking & tires wearing out etc? Has that improved?
For anyone, but especially for the guys who have made a similar switch, what can I expect between the 07 & 14 Columbia's?
More Room etc?
How about fuel mileage? I am currently getting about 5 mpg, although it is turned up to max HP & speed is set at 73.
Thanks for any heads up on the changes whether bad or good.

after 2011 columbias are basically glider kit.
Grumppy Thanks this. -
2014 Columbia aren't no longer available as leasing trucks. They are glider kits after 2011. Detroit, Cummins, or CAT in the glider kits.
Grumppy Thanks this. -
Hummmm... explain "Glider Kit".
Since I am not familiar with the term Glider Kit, I am not sure the next question is relevant or not. So, If a "Columbia" is no longer available... what is available now? A Casada?
I am sure they will be renting something comparable to the Columbia & whatever Ryder is leasing along that line now.
Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this subject. Just never had any reason to look around for a truck. I just drive whatever the company has.
Thanks again for any relevant input. -
glide kit is a new truck with remanufactured pre-dpf engines like Detroit Series 60 12.7 non-egr. Transmission or rear differential axles can be remanufactured.

Brand new Cascadias are available for rent/leasing.

Thanks guys
I appreciate your explanations on that. So, now back to the original questions. What general differences should I be expecting?
Has anyone really had starter issues etc..???
MPG with these trucks??
Again, any advise, good, bad or indifferent...??? -
Me and my friend drove 2012 Cascadia from Hirschbach and maintained by Ryder. The best mpg at 69 mph was 8.9 mpg. With newer aero package in Cascadia would be 7% more efficient. That could be 9.5 mpg. I loved it.

Didn't even know Ryder was leasing glider trucks. Thought they only did Cascadias.

I kinda like the steering wheel controls for Jake, markers and cruise.
A tad more roomier up front.
Dislike the headlight switch on the left above the key.
Comfortable ride.
2014 Cascadia that is.Grumppy Thanks this.
