Metallic particles in used engine oil

    I am going to buy a truck, Freightliner Columbia 2001 12.7 Detroit Diesel 880 000 miles. The truck runs very well no overheating on big hills with 40k lbs. Does not burn to much oil, 1 gallon every 15k miles. Today I changed the motor oil and there are some "Metallic particles" in the used oil. Please check the picture and tell me what do you think. Some people say, is from the bull gear, other - main bearings...... FOT5B11.jpg I know the picture is bad, but this chips look like a stainless steel particles...

    Yeah looks like you should walk away from the truck but looks more like bearing or cam to me

    That big piece looks like a chunk. That wouldn't be from a bearing. More like the bull gear. One way to find out! :Monkey wrench::Wrench: :)

    I had a Detroit. They found metal in my oil once. It was coming from the air compressor. So I got a new compressor. I thought I was gonna have to get an overhaul.

    I would stay away. 5000k isnt a good deal if you need a 10,000 rebuild.

    I would say yes to buy it. If you have the money for a in frame just incase. My friend had same metal from drain and turned out to be a air compressor too. I bought a 01 century 12.7 that's making me money for 9000. And I'm getting 7.1mpg for the last 60 days. Running around PA NJ MD with a dry van.

    Good luck rebuilding for 10K. It's more like 15-20K if done right.
