Problem: Loaded or not when im driving i notice the temperature gauge start rising in a matter of seconds...turnin Check Engine light on and temperature light on.
Fan start to work for a couple a seconds and then gauge drops to 0...

Its getting very annoying...however truck doesnt shut down.

Any hints on what to look? could be the temperature sensor gone bananas?

    Thanks

Rather than guess, use an IR gun and check the engine temps...

An erratic gauge is almost always a sensor problem.

    Yeah its a Detroit S60 470hp.
@ Powder Joints: Theres some codes when gauges reading before ignition but never paid attention, unless truck doesnt start.
@ RSQ20: It only happens randomly its not continuous.,hard to wait with the gun, we have one at the shop!
    @ wonderdog: Its a Detroit S60 rated at 470hp.

Baha dont really understand your post, sorry.

Try to retreive the codes. I forget that truck but I think you hold the odometer button like 6 seconds. I could be wrong, not the first time. :)

The laser gun will help. You can shoot the oil cooler housing and the top and bottom of the block. It should heat up evenly. If it's not possibly the impeller blades are wore off the water pump where it's dead pumping.

A bad temp sensor will do it too. It's located on the passenger side of the head close to the firewall. If I'm not mistaken you also have a fan sensor towards the top of the radiator. But since your gauge is all over I would check the ECT first. It should throw a code is why you should pull them. You could take the ECT off and put heat to it while you ohm it out. I'll turn my stove eye on low and rest the tip on it or you could suspend it in boiling water which is 212*. It should read open and when you get to about 195* your meter will read about 10,000 ohms or greater. But since it cost about $20 it's easier to replace. :)

Also consider it's not always the sensor but you could have a bad wire or connector. Get them codes and it'll give you a good starting point.
