O.K.So I have an issue I am concerned about and hopefully someone can put my mind at ease on this .I have a 2009 cascadia with a detroit DD 15.My question is when I am pulling a hill(even a small hill and not fully loaded,my engine temp goes up to 215-220 and finally hits 225 before i hear the fan kick on and the temp goes back down to 215 or so.That seems a little hot for me and has me concerned.I have read that this engine has a variable speed water pump that is controlled by a clutch that is controlled by the ECM.How would I check to see if it is operating correctly,or is there a fan setting on the ECM that needs to be recalibrated? Thanks for any and all advice!!!

The fan comes on by certain temperature. Any truck, even when not fully loaded can trip the fan. On slight inclines going through Arizona with 80k pounds, I don't down shift and there is enough load to raise the coolant temp to kick the fan on. I've been in such a head wind, I was near tripping the fan also loaded at 80k pounds. As long as the fan is coming on and there is no HOT COOLANT temp light, you're fine.

I wouldn't worry about it, until the ECM alarms on the dash. If it's kicking the fan on before you get an alarm on the dash, it's obviously doing it's job, properly.

It's probably all that first gen EGR and DPF crap attached to the power plant, too.

All in all, I'd say you're in the clear, for now.

Also, 180-240 are considered normal operating ranges.

Mine is the same. Freightliner says the ecm is programmed that way & it's not a problem. It bugs me that you only have a few degrees between the time the fan is supposed to come on & when the high coolant temp alarm sounds. I'm in the process of wiring up a manual over-ride switch on the dash so I can turn the fan on myself. If you stop at the top of a hill the water temp will never cool down enough for me to feel comfortable shutting the engine off.

This and the retarded jake switch on the steering wheel are my biggest gripes with the truck so far.

and your gage maybe be a few degrees higher than what the ecm is reading but sounds like it is spec. your water pump is not computer controlled it is belt driven with fins on the backside, as long as the belt is on it and the pulley is not spinning on the shaft or leaking around the shaft, it is good. the ecm controlled clutch on the water pump did not start until the ghg14 dd series engine this year model.

I had same problem on my old 2009 by 600,000 miles my water pump finally started leaking I changed it on the side of the road in a hour . Pump was less than 100 bucks and it went back to normal 2 miles or so on a hard pull with 95 to 100,000 lbs before fan kicked in and quickly dropped temps back to 200 in 90 degree weather
