If you were having idle timer issues with the last one, you'll definitely have it with the new one. Hopefully it's spec'd with a Webasto heater and ParkSmart A/C. We spec ours with both. ParkSmart is a little expensive, but worth it for driver satisfaction. Webasto's are pretty darn reasonable, and I personally don't understand why every truck doesn't have one.
From a technical point of view, idle timers are set because of DPF filters. Today, idle exhaust is an engine's kryptonite. It reduces DPF filter life by half and loads up the oil with carbon particles that are like throwing sand in your oil pan, severely reducing the engine's productive life span. Additionally it carbons up the exhaust after treatment sensors reducing their useful life expectancy ... those are the ones that leave you on the side of the road in the middle of the night.
Anyways, good luck with the new truck ... I'm sure you will enjoy it. They are exceptionally driver friendly, especially when equipped with the DD15 engine and the DT12 transmission.

nah, on our cascadia's all we gotta do is turn the cruise control on and bump the idle up to 700 rpm. tricks the computer into thinking it's going down the road and she idles all night. I know this because I was using the truck I will be getting for a loaner when the truck I currently have was in the shop.

appears you were correct on the cascadia. I have a loaner truck and turned the cruise control on and bumped idle and it still shuts off.

even with the hand warmer on the sensor it isnt idling.

if the temp is above 75 ot below 25 its supposed to idle.

not sure if it has the Webasto or the Park Smart in it.

    ideas?

well, that didn't take long. a little troubleshooting and trial and error and mystery solved.

my Freightliner Columbia has a very different anti-idling system than the Freightliner Cascadia I just got.

Tried setting the cruise and bumping idle at the 5 minute mark when the check engine light flashes warning you the truck will automatically shut down. That didn't work.

Tried putting the transmission splitter in high, that didn't work.

I found the temp sensor in it's usual spot, just a little farther back. my usual handwarmer trick to fool the ambient air temp sensor into thinking it's warmer than it really is didn't work either.

Tried several combinations of things. Then I remember the loaner truck I had awhile back, had an ambient air temp sensor up front. So I popped the hood, and sure enough there was #2.

Brought the handwarmer on the one on the rear up to the front, but still wouldn't idle. Tried unplugging the rear sensor, still wouldn't idle.

I was beginning to get a little worried that there was no bypass, but I didn't panic.

Finally, I got a 2nd hand warmer out and wrapped the rear sensor, and kept the front one wrapped with it's handwarmer. If this didn't work I was gonna need to do some serious research.

But....30 minutes straight and counting and still idling. :)

just to update...cold air kills the warmers after 4-5 hours.

wrapping them with a bandana helps but not the total solution as they still fizz out after 5-6 hrs.

I found wrapping them with the bandana and sticking them in a really warm insulated glove and then putting a plastic bag over them keeps the cold out and idles 12-13 hrs.

Based out of SLC, Utah I drive a company leased 2014 Freightliner Cascadia with a 10 spd. Automatic. Date of Mfg. 10/14. I have tried every trick known to man to get this truck to idle but nothing has worked for the long term. Now I did set the trailer brake and had the tractor brake released, tricking the computer but that only lasted 2 nights before it stopped working. I read about the Temp. Sensor theory but I have not been able to locate the sensor. I have looked along the drivers side, inside of the frame where the wiring harness is all the way to the rear.and did not find a sensor. Upon further research of this forum and other forums someone said there was a front Temp. Sensor somewhere near the radiator ? I'll have to look into that but right now this POS won't idle and it seems that most of my loads are located on the east coast in the colder climates. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Wanted to note that this truck is not equipped with the Idle Optimiser feature or any other device to let you know that the engine will shut down after 5 minutes of idling. Company supervisor's told us our trucks would shut off after 5 mins of idling and didn't tell us how to over ride it cause their watching everyone's idling and they want to keep it below 35 percent across the board. This is my idle percentage's, 2nd month 66*%, 3rd month 57%, 4th month 42%,
5th month 36% and this month ought to be well below the 35 percentage mark as it won't idle period!!!

Funny how this got completely ignored. "I don't care if I kill the truck, I want to idle!" I look forward to the thread complaining about sitting and not making any money because the truck is in the shop.

By the way, has anyone mentioned finding a company that allows idling or equips APU's?

I need electrical schematics for your truck. As a prior truck mechanic, I know these are hard to come by. The solution involves altering one or more sensor inputs to the computer. I have recently suggested splicing a toggle switch into the tach sensor circuit. (This will throw a CEL but might allow you to idle.) Water temp. sensor could be located near the upper radiator hose. An ambient air temp. sensor could be located anywhere. Have a mechanic locate these for you if necessary.

Chances are pretty good I'll move to a brand new Kenworth with 0 miles sometime in Feb. or March of 2016, these Freightliner's go back to the dealer they leased them from just before they hit the 250K, it's got 87K right now.

As a temporary solutuion, could you buy some extra wheel chocks and chock several truck & trailer tires and release all brakes?
